Dominique Beaumont, owner of Movement for Living, says pilates is focused on getting the smaller, deeper layered muscles to work so that you have better function, stability and mobility at joint level. "The principles of pilates gives you a guide as to what to expect from a class, with the six main focus points being about breath, centre, precision, flowing movement, concentration and stamina. While pilates does focus on your abdominal muscles, its much more than that. It’s about all over body balance and strength."

Modern day approach
Dominique has a modern day approach to pilates, with a focus on healthy movement and strength on top of function. With a focus on release to strengthen, and lengthen to strengthen, Dominique will take you through a well balanced class where you get to explore the movement throughout the body and enjoy the ability to flow but also to control. It is her balanced approach to this that encourages her clients to get the most out of their movement experience. Her ethos is that movement creates movement, and that goes for all aspects of our lives, be it physical, emotional or mental. "Movement for Living classes leave you feeling strong, flexible and balanced. Sessions incorporate standing, seated and floor based work and end with a breath practice that guides you into meditation and relaxation. Bringing awareness that we are not separate entities of body and mind, but we are the mindbody."
Preggy Pilates
Many woman start pilates when pregnant as a way to train for childbirth and motherhood. Pregnancy and childbirth is life's greatest miracle but is not without intense challenges for a woman physically and mentally. Pilates is a wonderful tool to help strengthen and train for the stresses the body will undergo, but also to release and mentally prepare. "The body changes hugely throughout pregnancy and pilates helps keep balance and tone, strengthening areas of weakness and releases the pressure on lower back and prevents back pain. It is also a great way of learning how to control and focus on your breath which is important for childbirth," explains Dominique. Dominique focusses on healthy tone of the pelvic floor and guides you to work with the strength but also release of the pelvic floor to prepare you for birth and the after effects.
