why not ask your family dr or paed what they think about it?
they would also suggest a ST you can use.
My son is 3 years and 3 months now and I also worry about his speech. our pead suggested I see a specific ST who helps babies who struggles to suck at birth with different kind of brushes etc.
he says it sounds like my son is a bit "tongue tied"
well I am glad to report that he has suddenly improved so much that I am not going to make a appointment with this ST.
She is in Krugersdorp.

Hey Cookie

I worked with a Speechie for 2 years at a special needs school in Fourways, she also has her own private practice.

Thank RM

I guess I am rather stressed and worried about the whole situation. I will definitely do some research as to which ST would be good/recommended and send him there - sooner rather than later! I do want him to be on par with the rest of his peers...

will keep you updated on what progress I'm making..

My son had ENT issues as a baby and toddler which means his speech was delayed. I used a ST during Grade O and Grade R to try to improve his pronunciation - it did work well.

I used it again in Grade 1 for part of the year - and when I felt he was on par with his friends I then stopped it and just kept on checking.

Request an evaluation and a report first - they would do a session and then sit with you and run through what the problem areas are and what they suggest doing to address.

My daughter who is 5 is doing speech therapy at the moment - she really pronounces words so badly I am about the only person who can understand her. She has been in speech therapy this year and I must confess I have not seen much in the way of improvement.

It can be very good if you find the right person - there are many schools who have ST or OT who come out to them. The school may recommend someone.

Try not to be scared of it - it is not this huge thing. The issue is more than they need to be prepared for Grade R - and they need to hit Grade 1 running, so any assistance you can give them to get over any issues and get onto par is a huge help now.

Has anyone taken their child to a speech therapist, if so, what was the reason and was the experience helpful etc...

My 4yr old's nursery teacher says she is a bit worried about my son's speech (can't remember the term she used for how he speaks) but anyway, he still has the baby element to his voice and therefore not many people can understand what he's saying unless they listen VERY carefully!!

So i'm considering finding a speech therapist, of which if anyone knows of a good one in Jhb (Fourways or surrounds) please let me know... or if you have any suggestions as to how else I can deal with this please do pass them along...
