file Any Advice - 1yr old holding his breath when upset

I used to do this as a kid and the third time it happened my mother was so desparate she put me in the bath and sprayed me with cold water. I never did it again.

But then in those days the whole psychological aspect was not really examined so the experts of today would probably be shocked at that method.

Thanks Staceylee!
Going to have a look at 'spasme du sanglot' and get a better idea of the whole thing!
Thanks so much for the reply.

Hi 02Jojo,

Wow, that does sound scary. I think in french its called the ' spasme du sanglot' and is quite frequent in young children.
I've heard and read that its normally nothing to be worried about ( but i'm sure i'd be in a state if it happened to me)
My dh sister used to have them when she was younger and his mom always talks about them and about how scary it was.

I know that the passing out and turning blue is what can happen but heard that the rolling of eyes and if turn pale, then you should speak to your dr.

It is just a way to express their emotions, anger etc but if you're worried ( like many of us would be ), I wouldn't hesitate to consult.

I have 2 little girls and we living in Hong Kong.

It's very hair raising 2kidmamma! It really is not a common thing but happened a few weeks ago and then again yesterday that he actually passed out!
Thanks for the suggestion regarding the play thereapy!

This has never happened to me because the face blowing usually works. Sounds quite hairraising though. Maybe you should consider taking him for Play thereapy to see what his triggers are and try work from there.

Good Morning

I hope some of you ladies can give me a bit of advice...

My LB is just over a year now and he has started to hold his breath when he is upset (hurt himself or doesn't get his way)

He starts to cry and then just stops breathing until he goes blue. Yesterday his eyes actually rolled back and he passed out! It is so frightening.

I am a wreck as soon as he starts to cry (he is generally a happy go lucky little chap who hardly ever crys). I have tried the whole picking him up before we get to that stage, which normally works but there have been a very few occassions when he stops breathing!

What do I do in that situation? I've blown in his face to try and get him to take a breath, I've patted his back, I've wiped his face with a face cloth ect ect ect.

Do any of your little ones do this, or have done this in the past? Please could someone give me some advice?
