question-circle Runny tummy from antibiotics

Marley James has just finished a course of antibiotics and yes the augmentin was definitely the culprit. He did not seem to be in any pain from the runs it was just an inconvenience.

As soon as the antibiotics got out of his system he was doing okay again. I did not use any pre biotics i confess in fact i did not even think about it, but now i know for next time. I suppose also he did not suffer too much because he is still breast feeding. But thanks for the post i would have been worried had it not self abated because i wasn't aware that antibiotics gave a runny tummy in kiddies.

Julz the weird thing is its not his first time on Augmentin - in the past it was not a problem. The tonsilitis does seem to be a thing of the past though

Thanks girls - will try the capsules inteflora and put it in his milk. I do actually have the chewables at home, but he spit it out and told me its "sleg" :) so I just gave him the reuteri. Juanita I dont think its the age/exposure of the reuteri, cause I bought a new bottle on Monday. His tummy did start the same time as the tonsilitis, but it was green and the pead said its not unusual with an infection, but now its brown and I think related to the antibiotcs.
staceylee right now ethan is anti fruit and veg :( . but he loves rice. will immediately call MIL to cook him up some rice for lunch.

Augmentin is often the culprit. I suggest you call your paed. If he has such a bad tummy the drugs may not be getting a chance to work.

Hi,

Apart from the obvious of staying away from dairy, you can also try foods to help 'constipate' . Bananas, rice, cooked carrots, apple compote, just to name a few.

I have 2 little girls and we living in Hong Kong.

I think maybe you should try a different interflora. Reuteri never helped for my lg, but probiflora worked like a charm. im not sure if the reuteri was in heat some time or another??? I just know that i stick with interflora now.

Also, are you sure that he doesnt have a bit of gastro now and maybe its not related to the antibiotics at all??

Hi LoriF

We have had the same problem with Lior, especially having been under anaesthetic 3 times with in a space of three weeks and each time followed by a course of antibiotics. The doctors normally prescribe Reutri drops (probiotic) but this does NOTHING for Lior, so eventually my paed suggested Interflora 25 (these are capsules that I open and disolve in his milk, give it to him tiwice a day (morning and evening) and within the first day his poops sorted themselves out - nor more runny tummy - All this new stuff on the market seems like a load of crap - well to me anyway, dont want to offend anyone, its all the old traditional meds that still work wonders. - hope this helps
