Oh yeah the biting phase

At 21 months I'm convinced my son is a 'vampire' LOL But like Mandy B says, some tend to do it when they are seeking attention or procteting their territory. My naughty son now warns me when he is about to bite. He will call me and point at his teeth then I know I have to tell his playmate who is playing with his toy to put it down :S

I tried the biting back but it never helped I guess they just outgrow it. The word NO has never existed in my son's vocabulary so time-outs and whatever else will never work for him.

Well, I couldnt bit my child.. so thats the only thing we didnt try, but we tried everything else. naughty corner, showing attention to the victim and ignoring the biter and smacking and talking.. honestly.. One thing i noticed is that he bit mostly when he was needing more attention from me.. If i was ignoring him because i was catching up with friends or busy with something, he bit..

I understand how helpless you feel as I also "FLED THE SCENE" in tears once or twice at my wits end!

The thing that did work the best was ignoring him and giving atention to the other child but it was hard to do.. My son bit for almost a year!!!!! DROVE ME INSANE but he is 2yrs 6 months and has stopped now. His teacher said, its the kids personality and they all grow out of it...

Personally I wouldn't bite back. All you're doing tgen is sating mommy bites too. It's like smacking your kid and telling him not to smack others. I dunno - just didn't sit right with me.

James started biting so we did the following and it worked within a DAT or two. When he bites someone, we pick him up, look him in the eye ans firmly say "No! We do NOT bite" then he goes in a corner for 1min and i ignore him or sit with the other kid he bit and play wirh them . After a minute (during which he screamed blue murder" I go to him, give him a cuddle and a love, repeat the not biting thing and then go back to whatever we were doing. He figured it out pretty quickly. Now if we can just get him to stop throwing his toys...... (literally)

We went through the same when our little girl started going to daycare.

Here's what we did then:

When she bites me; I stay calm, say no firmly and walk away, if she's on my hip I'll put her down on the ground and just walk away, sometimes she cries, sometimes she doesn't but when she comes back to me I always tell her, No biting. End of story.

It took a few times but she understood exactly, as I don't believe in fighting fire with fire ;)

My mom said the exact same thing - BITE BACK!

Also not to bite to hard, but to bite that he feels it and feels it hurts..

But as you know some children are just so damn stubborn and come back for more....

I agree, bite back, just not to hard :) Just so he knows that what he is doing is causing pain. My boy did they same and I always thought that biting back is a bit harsh, but one day I could not take it anymore and without thinking, took his hand and bit him. He got more of a scare than anything else, but he thought twice about biting. If he got the urge to bite, I just reminded him that mommy is going to bite back and anyone else that he will bite, will also bite back. After a while it stopped.

Bite him back - I know this sounds terrible but when they are little they dont seem to associate the pain that they are casuing by biting if you smack their hands - but when you bite them they can associate the pain with the wrong they are doing - did this my girls and it worked - just a suggestion :)
