I fondly remember the days when we had exactly the same problem with the kicking and screaming after waking up from a nightmare. (fondly because it doesn't happen anymore, it was crap when it did.)
She didn't want me, if I went to her at night she'd go at me like a wild animal. She also got moved to the potties around 18/19 months and the children are bigger and badder. Because of the frequent wakings we moved her to a 'big girl bed' during that time and for some reason that seemed to have helped (not over night but after a week or so) because with the change of bed came a change of routine and for a week I took over putting her to bed because she's a daddy's girl and he is ever so 'gentle' (in other words, she has him wraped around her pinkie - not saying I scream, hit and shout because I don't but my no is my no, my boundries aren't gray and she knows this and prefers her father when she feels like being naughty)
That said, the nightmares wasn't her being naughty, it was a combination of TV, finding the boundries, going to bed too late (because with daddy she wants him to lay with her, bring her more milk, anything to stay awake a little longer) I put my foot down and there you go.
She still has nightmares on and off, especially when she's over tired
*disclaimer* I'm not the monster I make myself out to be but I get my kisses and cuddles in during the day. Bed time is bed time because sleep is just as important for the body as food and love for the soul
