Shame Want2btiny. I really hear you. I know the feeling. I wished I could spare my LG all the pain. I felt terrible for not being able to explain to her why she must be hurt in order to get better. It really is tough spot to be in, especially younger children.

The day at the hospital might be stressful, but the hard work will begin once you are home. She is going to need every little morsel of patience and love in your body. Be prepared for that. She might even have a lot of violent outbursts (mine did) trying to verbalise her frustrations of the procedure she had to endure.

Visits from grandparents can help to distract her from the pain. Any other form of distractions will be helpfull to her.

She is just going to need your love and support!

Hope your husband gets better soon.

Morning ladies,

I'm posting this morning, cause I'm really stressed out! I am really scared of this whole op thing etc.

My husband is not well for the last week, passed the doc twice since last Tuesday and I'm feeling like I'm the only "okay" person at this stage!

For those that is already through this, I might sound plain simple, but I'm so so stressed!

I'm eating like a pig and I feel jittery! :(

Hope I'll get a few more posts this week before Thursday morning with tips etc to make the whole thing more bearable!

WantBtiny, Having been through this a few times (the hospital thing with a young toddler).....

The most important thing is, the calmer the parent, the more calm your child will be.
This is really not that easy, but try and put your best happy face on possible, while still expressing that you understand any fears that she might have.

It is extremely important that you prepare them mentally for what is going to happen.
Our child therpist explained to us how to "play" through the whole procedure and what to expect. The first time I took my little one in for the tests under Anesthesia, I didn't prepare her, BIG MISTAKE.

I am not going into the details, but google "preparing your toddler for surgery". There are really nice websites explaining what you should say to your child at what age. I even found an online colour-in book that shows the hospital environment etc. We coloured it in and I explained what was going to happen.

I got a cheap nebuliser mask and we pre-played the whole event from around 5 - 7 days before the actual procedure. The actual theatre can be quite traumatising, it is important to explain that they might feel a bit dizzy and confused, but that you will be there the whole time holding her hand. Explain that she is going to fall asleep and have a wonderful dream where she can play with you and do anything she wants to do. She is going to wake up after the doctor is going to remove the "things in her throat" that makes her sick at times. You will be there when she wakes up (and her soft teddy or whatever) and she is going to be a bit sore in her throat but the nurse will give her pain medication that will make her feel better soon. The anxiety of being seperated from you will be scary to her, so, it is important to stress that you will be there and when she feels better you can all go home.

Take a lot of new toys (ideally) and stickers. My LG refused to put on the hospital gown, but once I put 10 princess stickers on it she was happy to put it on. I took baloons, anything that can provide distraction is a blessing!

Be kind and supportive, there was a parent that gave his 2 year old a hiding before the theatre because the child was scared and whiney! WTF? Not that I think you are one of those...

good luck! I think it is actually more traumatising for the parent than for the child if it makes you feel better. xx

Hi ladies,

Sorry for only replying now! A bit busy at work!

Thank you for every piece of thought and advice you write down for me,
I really need all I can get!

My LG had reflux when she was a baby and still throw up very easily, so
I'll definitely have a close eye on her in regards to the vomiting! Shame!

I am really stressed about this whole operation!

Will get my doctor to write me a note - thanks for that, I already have leave for the 30th, hope she will be much better by the 2nd, when do you think I can take her
back to crech, I read something about being careful of the throught getting infected when with other kids etc. ???

I must say, I was quite baffled by this strategy that seemed like "lets make all these kids vomit". I would love to know if there is any medical explanation for doing this. Maybe there is a really good one (I hope for anything else but wanting to discharge them sooner!).

Maybe I am sensitive about this topic, because when my LG woke up in ICU the nurses started giving her food about an hour after she woke up. She vomited so many times, while in terrible pain from a big operation. Then every other kid that came into ICU from an operation, the same thing happened, they gave food too soon and they all got nauseas.

Maybe someone can clarify this strange approach to healing!
