heart Disciplining of toddlers 2yrs old

14 years 2 months ago #226705 by Marijke
I don't have a boy, my middle sister has 2 and I will be honest and say that those 2 have both my husband and myself praying for another girl. B was the only girl in 'n class of 15 or so boys and it got to a point where she just refused to go to daycare anymore.

Our neighbour has a boy and I went to visit last weekend (he's turning 2 in October) he gets hidings and I was there while he was throwing a fit, it has no effect.

So yes, from an outsiders point of view, much more rough and tumble but again, especially with my sister, I can show you exactly where she's going wrong.

But no two children are the same, even if they are the same sex. My oldest sister has 2 girls and her second girl, cute as a button, would drive me up the wall - not as bad as the boys but quite close

Thank you Joybaby for an excellent thread and to all the ladies (Marijke-such honesty), GW for the article and flower girl) for the replies.

At 19 months old we are using praise/positive reinforcement, distraction, and alternatives when not behaving in a way that I find undesirable. Have copied the responses for when my little man is older. I love the suggestion of having fixed rules and the timeout approach.

Enjoyed the Dr Sears read and was surprised that Dr Dobson who also has Christian underpinnings argues for using a rod/corporal punishment.

I am planning to go the non-hitting route, (I wasn't raised with hiding nor do I believe in them) but we were 3 sisters and everyone has said that boys require a "firmer" read (being hit) approach.

Does anyone have any lb's who can shed light on whether they do require "fimer" raising?

Marijke, I just want to stand up and give you a massive round of applause. I think your post so is excellent. You were absolutely right about your word being final and sticking to it. I must be better at that!

Personally I do occasionally smack my toddler on the bum through a nappy but I try to reserve it for when he is doing something dangerous or when nothing else has worked. Like for example the 3rd time he has run away from me in the shops or when he's hanging from the curtain rails after repeatedly telling him not to. Usually the threat of spanking is sufficient though.

Good luck! I am struggling a lot with my toddler so I feel for you joy baby!

Hi Yaz!
Wow, thanks for the compliment! :woohoo:
I like to respond to these questions because for me it is like writing exam and having to put together everything I have studied the past 3 years. It helps me to put in words what I know I want to achieve.

Great article!! I will bookmark that one. I love the section where they explain the common misconception with regards to the interpretation of the word "rod" in the Bible.

I also feel it is important that parents support each other in this challenging journey. And lets face it, it is one heck of a ride!! For first time parents it is especially daunting.

Gloei, if you ever decide to write a toddler book yourself I'll be the first one to buy it :)

Joybaby, here's something to back up your case - as you know I'm a big Sears follower:
