question-circle Potty training for over a year - still no luck

He is very sensitive and a total perfectionist! He only started walking when he knew he could do it perfectly and never fell at all. Whenever he does have an accident, he is very apologetic and shy. Which is why I send him to school in a pull-up, I don't want to embarrass him. The fact that he knows the toilet should be private is also a problem, he won't let the teachers help him.

At least at home, we've taught him now that he must go and poo in the bathroom and he always goes to the bathroom now and tells us to go away. So we are making progress, it's just so slow and very frustrating. I must be honest, I have lost it a few times but when I saw how far back that put him I realised I need to be super patient and nonchalant about the whole thing. My DH says that our boy only does things when he's ready to and pushing him will just cause issues. I know he's right but it's hard when I always said my child would be potty trained by 2! So much for that...

I don't think he has a problem...if this keeps up I might take him to get checked though.

So slow and steady it is!

Is your child very sensitive in general?

Mine is and I do think it is a contributing factor.
My LG also gets upset about accidents though I never scold or punish her. She is just a very sensitive soul! I just keep reassuring her that everything is okay and that she is still learning.

There is off course a very small chance that there could be a physical bladder related problem, however I doubt that any doctor will be concerned untill your child is past the 4 year mark and not pottytrained (or must at least show other bladder problems too). I was really surprised to see the amount of children with bladder problems under 6 while in hospital with my LG. Most were born defects like my LG.

Thank you so much!

It's good to know that I'm not alone in this.

GW - I loved that thread...my sister's little girl potty trained in a week. She was 26months at the time. I've just felt like there's something so wrong with him. Haven't been on Moomie for ages...so glad he's normal! :P Will relax and let him continue to take the lead. We'll get there eventually.

Hi Claire!

Did you see my thread?

I experienced or are experiencing all of your issues as well.
The thing that freaked me out the most that she only started saying now (3 years, 3 months) when she wants to go to the toilet. Before that, I never got the idea that she gets the "Sensation" of needing to go to the toilet.

All 3 doctors I spoke to said that I must chill out. Some children are really only ready to pottytrain emotionally closer to 4 years of age!!
We are making slow progress, though we are moving forward.

I don't really have any advice for you! Just try to keep calm when accidents to happen and clean up with minimal fuss. But I am sure you know this already.

I have heard other moms say before, don't think you will pottytrain a child when YOU feel ready, a child will be ready when he is ready!

It is frustrating to hear that other moms trained their 22 month old in one week and you are struggling for a year and a half...I think I have realised that one shouldn't compare and accept that children are really ready at different ages, even if we think it should have been sooner.

Good luck, I KNOW this is really, really, frustrating!!

Claire, I can't offer to much advise on this one, but I can tell you that i'm in the same boat and you are not alone!! I'm going to start potty training my LG this summer and hoping that if she doesn't wear nappies anymore that her older brother will get with the program!!

I really need some advice here:

My LB just turned 3. We have been potty training for over a year. We started when I was pregnant with my LG and it was a disaster, so I decided he wasn't ready and waited until after she was born. Then we tried again. He made progress but then got really sick and landed up in hospital, which set us back.

So here's where we are now:

- He stays dry most nights and nap times (which shows me he's more than capable)
- He has never gone #2 in a potty/toilet, never.
- He has accidents if in undies but stays dry in pull-ups.
- He has never asked to go to wee. I still have to take him every 30 minutes or he has accidents.
- At school, we have a real problem. He won't wee in-front of strangers (or his teachers) So I send him in a pull-up. But if he has an accident in his pull-up, he gets really upset and then has a lot of accidents after that.

Please help. Has anyone else gone through this? How do I get him to the point where he can take himself to the toilet?
