My son is 2 years and 2 months and when I took him for an assessment at 2 years, they told me he was on the level of a 1 year old. He has been going for speech therapy, but lost interest very quickly and I have now been recommended to go to an educational psychologist and a neurologist for further assessment since it seems that his "verbal IQ" is far below his "non-verbal IQ". (I made appointments, but have to wait 2 and 4 months respectively to get them!)

Over the last few months I have read up a LOT about these kinds of issues and I have learned 2 crucial things:

1. Trust your instinct! A mother really does know! I have been suspecting for months that my child's speech is not on par with other kids his age. However lots of people told me that boys and kids who learn more than one language always take longer, that other kids they know had the same problem, etc., so I didn't do anything about it sooner.
2. NEVER WAIT AND SEE if things will improve by itself! It is like cancer, the sooner it is diagnosed, the sooner it can be treated and the better your chances of healing are! You can not be overly paranoid in this respect; if you suspect your child has ANY problem, take him/her for assessments immediately! In your case I would recommend a speech and hearing test.

Hi Evestyles :)

If I were you I would certainly take him for a hearing test. I can understand that you must be fed up with going to doctors etc but it is better to get everything sorted out before he falls behind. If I look at the "learning problems" both my sisters kids have with their children in primary school now, it all went wrong at pre-school age and everyone just said that "children all learn at their own pace". Although it is true that children do things at their own pace and often it could be fine I really believe in a parents gut instinct when it comes to these matters. I am not encouraging mass histeria over every small thing, but if something concerns you enough to ask around about it I think it is a good idea to get a profesional opinion about it.

Hi all!

Hope you're well

I know this post is a few months old but glad I found it.

My son turns 3 at the beginning of June and I am worried about his speech. When I was initially concerned everyone told me that he's a boy and he's lazy but then we eventually found out that he had glue ear so had grommets put it. His speech improved slightly and slowly but it has been more than 6 months since he had the grommets and his speech isn't where I think it should be.

There are times when we (me and DH) don't understand him - he tries to say the words but doesn't get them right e.g. he doesn't put consonants at the of words so will say "doh" instead of "dog". He also babbles in between speaking words we can understand. His teachers don't understand him and our closer family has trouble understanding what he is saying.

Again everyone is telling me that I must give it time but I really feel like there is something else going on.

Do I take him back to the ENT who did the grommets or do I go straight for a hearing test?

P.S We spend thousands going from doctor to doctor with his ear and chest back and forth and months later only found out about the glue ear. Don't want to (can't afford to) go through that again.

As I'm typing this I'm realising that I should probably just make an appointment for a hearing test but any advice or recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks so much!!

Loris have you had him tested for hearing perhaps? It can effect speech even if hes understanding things. Or it could be a little laziness on his part - a friend of ours son spoke like an 'alien' for the longest time, then suddenly started speaking okay once he got rid of his dummy (3 or so).

Kaylee is 2yrs,2months and speaks quite well. Answers yes and no, puts words into sentences (just not using 'the', 'and' etc) but each month we see new and different progress. And we see it in english and afrikaans as she is at an afrikaans daymom and english at home. We tend to speak normal speak to her, not baby talk so she picks up the normal words. She told me I was naughty today for moaning at he daddy lol.

First angel resting 25/06/2009 stayed with us a short 7 weeks but we still miss you.

Problem I had with my LG was that when she learns more than one language before one language is fully stable then speaking can be slowed down because it's too much at one time - and she gets confused.

but my one is speaking very well now on her own, and she's 3.5 years.

Hi Loris,

When I went for the 1 year check up with my pediatrician, she advised that Paige should be talking, ie putting words together in a sentence between the age of 18 months- 2 years, she said that if your child is still struggling it is worth taking them to a speech therapist early and getting them checked, as the sooner you do it the easier it is to rectify.

Perhaps chat to your Dr to see if they can recommend you to someone, and see if your Dr feels her talking is on track or need to be checked.

Good luck

So my LG she still babbles, I just don't know if there is something wrong with her....she lears quick, she sings in 4 languages, counts to 20 in 2 languages to 10 in arabic, and knows ABC's, animals, sounds of animals, the colors she recognices 8 and knows it in english and Arabic + she can recognice few numbers too, but when it comes to sentences she doesn't seem to get it right....she sometimes will call her brother, Ryan come and drink juice....that is a perfect one....but it is not with everything, and what worries me the most is when I ask her something she doesn't say yes, she repeats...not all the time but sometimes....and when she answears she wont say NO she will make a noice that I know which one is yes or no....what do you guys think? Where I live there isn't speech therapist so I don't know what to do.
