Hi,

I get that, if you making a yearly appointment, you want the doctor to spend some time with you, checking everything.

We in jhb, so our paed is Dr Jenny at the sandton medi clinic, I am really happy with her, but its really far for you

Good luck finding a good Dr for next years check up

Hi Niki,
We live in a small town, and Pretoria is a 2 hour drive away. I don’t mind the drive, and I would rather make the 'city-visit' for a good check-up once a year, then taking our local GP’s word for it.
I just hate paying for something, and afterwards wondering.

I would like to make a switch to a new doctor with our 2 year visit.
Can you tell me who your paediatrician is?

Hi Alida.

I do take my daughter for the yearly check up, she went at 1 and at 2 years old, also a healthy child,so we only see the pediatrician at the yearly check up and the GP when we have the old cold etc.

Our Dr is very good, she is thorough at the yearly check up, she does a developmental assessment and then a physical exam, the developmental assessment is really just a 15 - 20 minute discussion/ questionnaire around Paige's development, so last time we spoke around talking, potty training, coordination, ability to screw jar caps, build with building blocks, etc- we also chatted about food, eating and sleeping etc

Then she did a 10-15 minute physical exam, this was thorough, ie check heart, kidneys, stomach, ears, throat etc. they only do blood tests if there is something wrong, so for me that wasn't something I expected. If your child is healthy, I doubt they will send you for any blood work as this would only be the cause if they suspected something was wrong

in total , our appointment was probably about half an hour - 45 minutes.

Hi
I am the very fortunate mother of a healthy baby boy. He is one year old and has been to the doctor/paediatrician for only 4 times. When he was 6 weeks, 3 months, 6 months and a year. (Routine Visits) I thought those optional visits were the responsible thing to do.
But on his last visit (1 year), I was so disappointed. I am pretty sure my boy is 100% healthy, should I still take him him to the paediatrician to confirm just that? I did but I was not anticipating a 10 min rush exam and a compliment.
So, my question ladies. Is the yearly paediatrician visit always a rush, (listen to the heart, lungs and check the ears and listening to what the mothers says)? Am I naïve to want a little more? Should I feel confident that I have a healthy baby, if I am not confident in the exam that has been done? And am I crazy for wanting a complete check, and blood work done (for example)?
What is a routine paediatrician visit? Do you take your child?
