290708: i have been a SAHM now for 3.5 years, when i first fell preggs with angelique. then ange was with me every day of my life up until the day she cried when we drove past a creche, saying fwends fwends, she wanted to go play... angelique was 1.5 yrs old & she had a very good dialect and speech was excellent, cause of her older sister, but i dont think for one minute that keeping her at home till she was ready or till i was then ready was doing any harm to me or her!! AND it has NOTHING to do with anyone else...
my argument to your "comments" will be, my eldest had to go to creche from 1 yr cause i had to work, and today she has many problems, fisrtly ADD, secondly co-ordination, thirdly tenses, yesterday, today and tomorrow, she still gets them muddled up and she is 10, so sending them to a school/creche early does not nessesarily(sp) teach them anything...
i think you are a wonderful mother for what you have done so far and the choices you have made. and yes, please teach your daughter the oh so feminine hand gesture, speak to the hand, this face is NOT available!!!!

Claire A - you are so right. I do that most of the time, but really gets to me sometimes - say 1 out of the 10 times.

I think what upsets me most is the same people moaning did not comment at all on the fact that my LG was sitting at 4 months, crawling just before 5 months and started standing against the furniture at 7 months and walking at 10 months. NOTHING NOTHING NOTHING - thats just completely normal, but now with the speech or even any other thing she is not good at - it is focused on and commented on.

THEY MUST JUST LEAVE US ALONE otherwise I will teach my LG to say - SPEAK TO THE HAND (only joking).

Thanks ladies - I feel better , but somehow when I just stop to think about it - I get FIERY AGAIN

Ignore those with negative comments ! Smile sweetly and move on.

I personally feel it is better to let a child spend the first few years at home for emotional security (for the child). They need so much personal attention and encouragement as a babies.

Brandon was at home until he was about 26 months and I will keep Liam at home until he is about that age as well.

A 20 month old child is not meant to be fluent, and their pronounciation (sp) is bound to be bad - they are still learning how to control their tongues.

290708:

Hats off to you for keeping her home for 20 months! My LG is now 8 months old and I'm thinking of keeping her home until she starts Grade R! I'd say ignore the mean people, but they do get to you even if you try blocking them out. Some mommies just can't afford to be home with their babies so I think the comments come from a place of guilt and jealousy!

I've been toying with the idea of sending her to a creche or playschool at 2 years of age but shame man, they go to school for 13 years! Then Trudie started a thread here in the toddlers area "Arts & Crafts". She's homeschooling her toddler playing constructive games etc, so she has really changed my mind about send my girl to creche. Check out her blog here trudie-jollymommy.blogspot.com/

290708 I really dont think that you have been wrong in keeping her at home since you have had a nice lady whom you trust. She is not even 2 yet so her speech is still developing.

My LG is in creche and has been since she was 6 months old because I couldnt find someone to look after her at home but I would have preferred it. My LG has been sick and yes she learns stuff but she is still little.

Dont let people make you feel bad - I dont think you have done anything wrong. As long as she is happy then you know you have made the right decision :)
Hope she enjoys it!

Hi there all

My 20 mont LG has been with a nanny up until now. She will start daycare month end.

What I want to know, is what to do with people who feel that I have done injustice to her by keeping her home so long. I was really upset, okay now. These were a few of the comments I received.

1. Its about time, at least she can start speaking properly (pronounce better).
2. Good for you, did you think you could shield her forever, now she will start getting those baby illnesses.
3. At least she will now not say her vowels with a Xhosa accent.

I can go on and on - none of the comments were constructive - I dont know - I feel I want to slap them.

Anyway, having said that, please be honest and tell me what you think of being keeping her home for the first 20 months of her life?

Thanks
