file Adenoids and tonsils removal - your experience?

16 years 1 month ago #87816 by Tess_S
Mandy - my son had his adenoids out at about 25/26 months. He had constant blocked nose, snoring and drooling problems. Once we did the op, the drooling wen away (yay!) but he's had several colds since then.
As RM says, it's that time of year and he's at playschool so does pick up a lot of bugs. The great thing is no longer hearing his heavy mouth breathing at night, so he's getting a better sleep.
I would do the op again, but he did not need to have his tonsils out. Our ENT said that is something they can really only assess properly once he is on the operating table. So maybe look at getting a second opinion?
Good luck!

ENT's are all specialists. Having adenoids removed is a very minor operation, and baby/toddler/child barely notices it. Tonsils are a bigger issue and are actually quite painful afterwards.

My son had serious ENT problems, has had grommets (3 sets) adenoides removed, tonsils, ear drum graft, and various other issues.

20 months is really young. I am do not know your child and do not know the circumstances, but I would be cautious about whipping about anything and putting my child under any anaesthetic if there is an option to avoid it.

You also need to consider the environment - if your child is in a creche/daycare etc, odds are he is being exposed to numerous infections and is being reinfected almost daily. This may be something to look at.

Just be sure removing adenoids/tonsils are at that point where they are absolutely necessary before embarking on it.

It is winter now, so kids are more likely to be in a situation where they pass infection on - as said, I am not a doctor, do not know the severity of your son's condition - but personally I would explore other options (anti-biotics, changing the enviroment, etc) until I am sure that removing them is the ONLY option remaining.

hi Mandy

I had my daughter adenoids removed the first time @ 10months and it helped alot. remember that they tend to grow back so at the age of 3 and a half years we had them dont again and tonsils removed.

Best tip i can give you, is that when she goes in, go with until they put her under and tell then that you will be waiting outside the door until they are done and that they should call you before they wake him up. he will be much calmer that way. insist on it, do not ask. good luck

Hey Ladies

So my son is 20months and has never had a dry nose a day so we took him to an ears nose throat specialist and after exraying his sinuses he suggested we remove adenoids and tonsils as they are on the larger side and may be causing breathing problems -

did anyone else do this and did it help? and tips or advice?
if you had to do it again, would you?
