kitty cat: if he continues this wonderful behaviour of doing potty he will very quickly learn to go there himself. its not impossible as my eldest daughter was potty trained just after her 1st birthday. she was a cloth diaper baby as i couldnt afford disposables and she hated them in summer and her birthday the 20 january and just after that she would rip them off as soon as she wee'd or poo'd. i then bought 2 potties. 1 for her and 1 for her dolly. when dolly made a wee she would cum sit too. so no its not impossible.
follow your childs lead.
also dont be dissapointed if it goes well for a month or 2 and then it stops. potty training is 2 steps forward, 1 step back!!!

Hi there
I am really confused by my 16month LB's behaviour.
He pulls off his nappy when he has a poo. He pood on the carpet the other day!!! When he is finished with the poo (this is now when he does not pull it off) he will come to me and start saying mama mama and does not want to leave me until I change his nappy.

I bought him a potty yesterday just to see what he will do. I put him on the potty twice and he peed both times in it. I don't think he will go the potty by himself though, but then again, I only got it yesterday.

Now this might sound all very good, but I am very concerned that this is way too early for potty training! I read in a couple of mags that you should not start potty training too early..!?!
I decided not to force him to use the potty, but should I continue introducing it, or just ignore any "signs" until he is at least 2?

loris: i know exactly how you feel, i had my LG on nappies and then my LB was born, 2 kids on nappies is no laughing matter, my LG was 2.5yr when he was born and i thought perfect to get her off the nappy, no matter what i did she wouldnt go, it got so bad that she started keeping her wee in, so bad that after 14 hours of pinching her wee i have to give her meds to relax muscles cause by then they have spasmed and she couldnt wee, that then became a habit. so with a nappy or without one she just wasnt urinating at all. i gave up hope and thought id tackle this some other time. she came to me a while later in weeks and said that she is a big girl now and doesnt want a nappy, that was when i took the leap, would put her on potty & if she made a wee i would reward her with a kinderjoy, no wee no kinderjoy! i know many ppl dont believe in rewards but with my kids it works.
she got off the day and night nappy within a week, no accidents ever at night, probably due to her excellent pinching skills. she is now 3 yrs and this happened just before her 3rd birthday.
boys do take longer to potty train i hear and in winter they apparently wee more than girls. how true that is i dont know!
also wait till summer when she is so thirsty from the warm weather and drinks loads of fluids.
i dont think there is a easy way to potty train, you got to wait on their demand!!!

good luck

Well I found the best is to wait until they are ready then you have way less accidents and there's no real training required. My son was perfectly ready for months but he was afraid of a toilet and wouldn't use a potty... I left him and every so often would try encourage something to happen on the toilet. One day I promised him some ballies (tumbles) and he got this look in his face of almost crying (with joy) when he realised he was weeing and nothing scary happened. He was so happy that the very next night I even stopped putting a nappy and we never had not one accident - he was 2 years 11 months old.

My daughter just decided to stop wearing a nappy and would go to the loo herself... so I just stopped putting a nappy on but then I found she wouldn't go herself but I had to keep asking her if she wanted to go and she'd say yes and off we'd go. This went on for weeks... so I decided to leave her to ask herself... we had a couple accidents and then all was fine. We do still use night time nappies though as she seems inconsistent still in the morning with the odd wet nappy - she's 2 years 6 mths.

Most people I know have tried from when it suits them and end up going through months and months of accidents but eventually only when that child is ready will it work so waiting is far better.

I also want to start potty training my lo but she screms everytime i take her near the toilet seat. But she stands and giggles everytime i show her how to get on and off the toilet. You think she is mocking me?? She is now 22 months old

I believe it's best to wait till your lo lets you know it is time. x

I have also read that only after age 2, kids are ready to be potty trained. This is only a guideline though. Some kids are only ready around 3 yrs.

You need to look for signs that your boy is ready. For eg. my boy is 23 mths & tells me once he has made a poo. They are more aware now when they have made a wee/poo in there nappies.

Also try when it gets a bit warmer, by telling him when he needs to pee or poo he must tell you, than you can take him to the potty or toilet. Once he is more confident, than you can slowly take away the day nappies. Than if that goes well, than take away the night nappies....
