Since I am also trying to conceive I was totally amazed by the amount of information one can find about fertility on the internet. I would highly recomend to google some of your questions!
I am not expert, but with regards to your question:
Have you seen a Gynea? Maybe he can decide to do some basic tests to see if there might be a problem.
Do you know when you ovulate? This is really important since if you think you ovulate on Day 15 and it is maybe day 12 or 17 you will struggle to fall pregnant.
Sometimes women get implantation bleeding (light spotting) after a week or so after ovulation should you be pregnant. Maybe it isn't such a bad idea to do a home pregnancy test? Although the fact that you say that you normally get spotting before menstruation might suggest that it could be that too.
I have been reading up on low progesterone symptoms and interestingly spotting before your period is sometimes linked to low progesterone levels. This is only what I have read and would rather encourage you to visit your doctor.
You can google "how to predict ovulation". You will get hundreds of pages giving detailed suggestions as to determine your ovulation date. Day 1 is the first day of menstrual cycle with strong bleeding (not spotting).
This TTC journey sure is a confusing one...
