11 years 6 months ago #257582 by ayesha07
hi Krisps

i stumbled upon this and want to say i hope you find a gynae i know how horrible some can be.

i have an under active thyroid and very high insulin and my previous gynae said i will not fall pregnant, god willing i did fall pregnant and my last app with her she insisted i go for ovarian drilling due to pcos, i was already 4 weeks pregnant. i am currently seeing a doc at Garden City and he is absolutely a darling, when i told him about my previous gynae he started crying with me and said my weight would have made it difficult to fall pregnant especially with my diagnosis but there is always a way and god gives you a child no1 can tell you any different.

i have struggled with my weight my entire life and i am proud to say i am 4 and a half months pregnant and my baby is healthy and striving, god willing i will have an easy pregnancy. he also says there is no reason as to why i cannot have a natural birth and a c section will only be necessary if baby is breach wich will be determined at a later stage but the way it looks, i should be fine.

i hope you find the perfect gynae, they can give you hope when you need it most.

Hi Krisps,

Dr Elmarie Wypkema at Life Wilgeheuwel, she is amazing. She's never once made me feel uncomfortable or played weight-police. I usually weigh 55kg and during my first pregnancy I gained 20kg, she just told me to relax because she gained 46kg during her 3rd pregnancy and was fine afterwards.

By the way, she is gorgeous and not at all overweight today (some 20 years later). Her story was that she was incredibly sick the entire pregnancy and ate hard boiled sweets (and bread) from morning to night. Obviously 46kg is an extreme case and not advisable, but it makes her very understanding of every lady as an individual and of different types of situations.

I'll never change from her, even if she started charging double.

ps: I reaaaaaly hope she isn't your current gynae, I'd be very disappointed!

Have you maybe tried going to a dietitian? They might also be able to work out an eating plan for you that aids with the other meds you are on, and taking your PCOS and insulin resistance into account?

Thanks @IreneL for your message.

I understand that there are risks etc., but she's not helping with anything. I told her I've been on Glucophage before and it didn't help, but she said I must try it again because I must have done something wrong before...now I'm on it again feeling nauseous and lethargic all day everyday. And she put me on Provera because over the last few months my progesterone levels dropped and I wasn't menstruating and the side effects of that are weight gain and bloating which I definitely have so I'm not sure how she expects me to lose weight. I also haven't been on the pill since 2008, but my hormones have been completely haywire since then.
It's just frustrating because everything contradicts everything else and in the meantime, I'm just gaining more and more weight which results in me having to lose more and more weight before any gynae will help me.

I think your Dr is maybe just keeping your best interest at heart. Doctors unfortunately deal with cold, hard facts and dont always realise how it can make you feel. There are some dangers involved when having a baby and being overweight. It is her duty to warn you about it. It is also a bit easier to TTC when you're weight is a bit more average, although Im not sure why etc, not a doctor myself.

Has your doctor given you some advice re losing weight? Has she tried changing the pill you are on?

You can try changing doctors, you should obviously be with someone you are comfortable with, but I suspect any other doctor will also speak to you about losing weight if it is really a problem, especially if you are insulin resistant as well - it's their duty because they need to keep your best interest at heart.

Good luck!

Hi Everyone,

Can anyone recommend a gynae for me in the Westrand or Randburg area? My current gynae always makes me feel bad about my weight and basically says she'll only help me if I lose weight. I went on the pill in 2008 and it messed up my hormones so badly that I can't lose weight, I started losing hair after it and my skin just never cleared up since then, I just keep gaining weight. I've tried every single diet, I've been to personal trainers and been on Glucophage with no results at all, I am now doing a low carb diet which makes me feel a lot better, but no weight loss still. I'm 32 now and I'm too scared to TTC because of all the horror stories she tells me about being pregnant when you're overweight. With the PCOS and insulin resistance I feel like it's just going to get harder for me to get pregnant as I get older. I'm not sure what to do?

PLEASE HELP!
Thank you!
