question-circle Crying with every feed?

15 years 9 months ago #141711 by kgatlisoh
Ladies, i am having the same problem. My son just turned 6 months and he cries on every feed. He is capable of keeping food in his mouth and not swallow. After some time then he just let all the food out. This is so frustrating. He does take some milk but not as much as he is supposed to take. He is going for his 6 months checkup and will keep you posted on his weight, my guess is that it will be below what is recommended. I am so frustrated that I even thought of giving him soup. Please help

Could be teething although 4m is early (but not impossible). Try some teejel 15mins before a feed. She could also be feeling a bit sick - there's a nasty bug going around. J refused food for a bit just before he showed actual signs of the bug.

They go through fazes though. As long as she's not dehydrated I wouldn't stress. It's horrible for both you and baby to fight over meals and (I think) sets a bad precedent so if she doesn't want something wait half an hour and try again or try offer her something else like water or rooibos. She won't starve going with less formula for a few days but she will dehydrate.

Good luck!

always a paed on duty at Panorama (I'm sure it's like that at all hospitals). Dr. Gerrit De Villiers is on duty at Panorama. He is very good. He saw Emily in hospital after she was born while Dr. Theart was at the annual paed conference. Dr. Theart was at the birth and saw Emily the first day and then Dr. De villiers came the second day and then he also went to the conference and then Dr. Vermeulen saw us the last 2 days.

I was sooooo impressed with Dr. De villiers that I actually considered changing paeds, but rather stayed with Dr. Theart because I already know him quite well thanks to my sister's sick little boy (he unfortunately visits the paed ALOT and we take turns taking him because my sister or her husband can't always get off work).

Anyhoo - Emily seemed much better yesterday so will see how we do today. But I am more than comfortable knowing that Dr. Devilliers is available should we need to take her.

You guys are scaring me! :S K is only 2 weeks behind Emily in age. Hope its not fortelling times to come cos we're only just starting to have a happy baby.

Does she cry/fuss when you lie her down? It could well be a combo of ear / teeth but only a paed will tell you for sure.

Let us know the outcome. And if theres a paed NOT on holiday let me know too cos they all seem to be off.

This is very frustrating! (I think its a nursing strike) I found that is was teething and that meant my baby would nurse if he woke up (but only immediately after waking) at (ugh) ALL NIGHT.
Good luck!

Hi Charnenay,

Shame man, tough times! We've also had a very rough weekend with Lilly including sleepless nights for all of us. She's also extremely fussing when it comes to feeding and very cranky in general - cries a lot. Sounds to me like it could be teething or an ear infection (or both, I read teething pains can affect the ears as well).

I don't really have advice. Just know that you are not alone :) We might just meet each other at Dr. Theart's rooms tomorrow - hopefully he's not on holiday yet!

Hey ladies

Wondering if someone could shed some light.

For the past 3 days, my lg has started crying with every feed and refusing to eat or drink anything.

She has her first bottle at about 6/6:30 and has this one no problem because she is still sleepy and has not fed for about 12 hours, so she is hungry. Then, at about 9, she has her 2nd bottle with a little bit of fussing and doesn't really finish it. Then she has her cereal and cries after about 3 spoons and then I can't get anymore in. At 12, she has her 3rd bottle with a bit more fussing than the 9AM bottle, and only drinks about 100mls.

Then the real trouble starts, at 3PM, she REFUSES to drink, just screams when I put the bottle to her mouth and then she is generally unhappy for the rest of the day because she is hungry. So, from 3PM until about 7PM, she cries all the time while she is awake, she takes naps inbetween and will be happy for about 10 minutes after she wakes up but cries when I try to feed her or when she realises she is hungry (whichever one comes first). So, she is drinking about 50mls (if I'm lucky) between 12PM the afternoon until 6AM the next morning!!!!

Anyone else ever experience something like this or have any idea what could be going on?? She is a reflux baby and I am currently giving her 1ml of Gaviscon first thing in the morning only. Her reflux has never bothered her though, she just throws up ALOT, but it's never seemed to cause her any discomfort at all - she is usually a very happy baby. She is also bringing her hand to her mouth when she cries like that and seems EXTREMELY frustrated - could it be that her mouth is sore because of teething and that's why she does not want me to put anything in her mouth??? I check her temperature constantly and it is always below 37, so I don't think its her throat???

Will see how it goes today and if still not eating/drinking after 3, I will have to find out if our paed is available tomorrow.
