Child passport and unabridged birth certificate

If you do unabridged on your own, phone them once a week. That's all that works. And ask them to escalate the matter. I had to cancel a trip to Germany to go and visit my DH who was there for 6 weeks due to that thing not being ready. Phoning them all the time really makes a difference. Even the Home affairs official who I collected it from was amazed at how soon it was ready. Still took forever, but I hear most people wait 9 months!!!

The application for the passport was not to bad! Sent the application in and 3-4 weeks it was ready, But the unabridged Birth Certificate was another story! I have used an external company to get it sooner...it cost us R1200 we had it within 8 weeks.... The one we have applied for at Home Affairs was ready the week before we went to Australia in June 2010 - application already done in Feb 2010. (Luckily I have received the other one in time to applied for the Visa's) If it is a urgent matter, I strongly suggest to use an external company.

I took Alex' abridged birth certificate, my ID and hubby's passport down to the Home Office. You can download the forms off the internet.

It took 3 months to get it from them though. You are assigned a case number and can call the home office for updates - they are very helpful.

Are you talking about a British / foreign passport? I needed the unabridged for a British passport. Decided to hang 10 before applying for the British passport until we have travel plans as it costs R950 and expires after 5 years. So if we don't travel outside SA during the first 5 years of his life, it's sort of redundant. I called the British consulate and they were very helpful.

Neil took Dylan to home affairs. I downloaded and printed the forms and completed them at home and then off they went. It really wasnt too painful and two weeks later we fetched passport.
Not sure about the birth certificate. We didn't need the full one.

try www.bunnyhop.co.za. they are country wide and offer some info on their website. i know you can download the forms from the Dept Home Affairs website (not sure of it though) and then at least you can fill them in at home (remember only in black pen).

I applied for B's passport and unabridged Birth Certificate last month. The cost is R145 for the passport and R70 for the birth certificate. BOTH parents and child need to go to the department with both yours and hubby's ID docs, baby's birth certificate and of course 2 passport pics of the little one!
