Morning Julz,

No Essential Med is not based on salary. It is a medical insurance plan and that is what a member would pay. No other hidden costs.

I don't know if this will help, but there is a company called Essential Med (It is a hospital insurance). You pay R268 per month per person and you get unlimited dr visits, but not specialists, unlimited dental and optitions. However, you have to go to one of their Drs. Also, you don't pay for any medication.

They also have a hospital plan which costs R329 per month, in which you go to a hospital on their network and they pay out R6 500 for the 1st day and R4 500 for each day after.
Just a thought. www.essentialmed.co.za

I dont think there is any medical aid that will take children on their own.
I also dont think just a hospital plan would be the best especially if his child has ashtma as she might need chronic meds and a hospital plan wont supply those meds.
I was also on one of the top options on Discovery, but when Kyle was born, I had to change plans as it was going to be so expensive.
I stayed on with Discovery but went to teh Keycare Plus Plan. It covers my son that is 5 with his asthma meds and we have unlimited doctors visits. We also dont pay for medicine if we need it. You are covered in hospital as well. I think he wont even pay R 1500 for him and his 3 kids together on this plan.

Sorry I mean oxygen. Our friends moved to it but yes it was no different to Discovery.

On Oxygen the 2nd child is free as well BUT if you look at your cover, it's still the same than with the other medical aids to you will most likely run out of funds.

Isn't asthma a chronic condition? He then shouldn't run out of savings.

And if the child is admitted to hospital it will also not come out of savings.

You don't get a medical aid for kids only.
