mutha2b - if it was not for Pepe, I would not be able to work, or function actually ..... so it works both ways for me ....

Oh ladies, thank you so much for the replied. You have helped me immensely.

I think I must pay her half pay and get a replacement. I am already so stretched. :(

Reluctant mom, you really look after your nanny. I'm impressed.

mutha2b - always a tricky position.

You can request that she goes on maternity leave, if you feel the work she is doing is putting her or her baby at risk. She in turn can refuse, but then has to bring you a letter from her doctor saying that she is healthy enough to work until what ever day.

Legally she can work up to the day she goes in to labour if she is healthy and she is willing. On the other hand you can request she takes maternity leave when she is 6 weeks from due date, but she can refuse.

In terms of maternity leave, legally you need to hold her position open for her - or a similiar one. You do not need to pay maternity benefits (that is not legally required, but you can if you want to).

She in turn can claim from UIF - if she is lucky she will see the first payment some where around month 3 - 4, so odds are will not have much in the way of an income.

I have never had someone who has worked for me go off with a baby, but I think if I did, and they had been with me for some time, I would try to pay them R500.00 - R1000.00 per month while on maternity leave - what ever I could afford - but I totally get that you might already be stretched, we all are.

The lady who works for me earns a basic of R2500.00 + then I pay her extra to babysit so she earns any where around R2700.00 - R3600.00 depending on how social we have been.

I also pay a 13th cheque and give her a birthday bonus when it is her birthday.

She lives with us from Sunday night/Monday morning through to Friday evening and then goes home.

She does her washing, and also eats meals with us, and that is about it I think. She has also been with me nearly 4 years, and it has been really good so far, I could not cope without her - bless her cotton socks.

If the UIF is paid up to date, she can claim that, so you don't have to pay her.

My nanny is live in (Jhb) i used to pay her R2000 pm, after one year went up to R2200 and now is at R2500. She looks after both of my kids (both still babies 4 months and 20 months) and cleans the house, she doesn't get time to iron, but does the washing. I get someone once a week to iron.

My nanny doesn't get anything form me, she brings her own food and is totally self sufficient. I do pay for her rent (we rent her a room from someone in the complex where we live.) and for that she works one night a week (full night) and one weekend a month.

My maid went on maternity leave from Sept - Dec last year. I made sure that UIF was paid up to date so that she can claim UIF. I told her from the beginning that I cant pay her salary and get a 'replacement' for the 4 months.

I got a girl for the 4 months (knew her through my mother in law) to help me out around the house.

My one friend got a 'contract' nanny from Edubabe and was very happy.

Good luck!

Hello M2B - where are you situated - salaries differ quite significantly from between Cape Town and Jhb. Also, what hours does she work and does she get benefits? All these things will make a difference.

I have a dilemma. My nanny is pregnant and she looks like she is in agony. I can't let her come to work like this.
Problem is I already pay her R2000 a month and if I get a replacement, i will not be able to pay her and the replacement.

What is the normal procedure? What do I tell her? Do I get a replacement? But how do I work it out? Do I have to pay them both?

Also, i wanted to find out from other mommies if their nannies are sleep-in or go home everyday. What else do they do around the house? If I may ask, how much do you pay the nanny?

I feel so bad but I can't keep asking my mom to help with the baby, it's unfair.

Your assistance will be highly appreciated.
