How do feel about a walking ring?

I used a walking ring with both my boys.

I liked that I could have an extra 10 minutes where my hands were free to make supper or whatever, however, my 2nd little boy only started walking at 17 months and I sort of think it was because of the walking ring.

The thing that has actually made me against it was LB fell down stairs while in it. Older brother left safety gate open and the domestic didnt see him going to the stairs. He fell down about 10 steps. He fell right out the ring. Rushed him to the ER but no serious injuries. Only bloody nose and blue nose and bump on head. I have never had such a big fright in my life. Got home and chucked it out. Sisters were not impressed that he was in a walking ring.

I must say though that if he didnt get hurt, I would have had no problem with it.

I think the walking ring debate can get rather dangerous - most people have very strong views about it.

I think it also depends on the child - Brandon loved his, would have slept in it if he had the chance. Liam on the other hand hated it - he was far too eager to explore on his own.
1 advantage I did find was that due to the size of the thing, there were cupboards Brandon could not get into, and areas that the ring was too wide to fit into, so that was where I kept "off limit" things. Liam on the other hand, because he was crawling all over the place, would get into things, topple piles of Cd's ect and even managed to climb the top drawer of a drawer set we have and the damn thing fell over onto him.

But I do believe if you have any stairs (even if only 1), it needs to be blocked off when LO is in the walking ring - my pead at the time said his biggest thing about walking rings, was the number of head injuries he had treated due to babies falling down stairs while in a ring.

I also believe that like everything we do in life, moderation is the key.

personally I dont like them, From what I have read/ heard, they dont help your LO's to learn to walk as they are walking on thier tippy toes rather than flat footed.

I have also had friends who told me about children who got hurt in them , as children are then more mobile,I have heard of a little girl who drowned in a walking ring. I guess each to thier own and if you keep an eye on your child, but I always feel it just takes a second for something bad to happen.

I have never used one and perhaps these are all just stories, but I dont think I will take the chance. perhaps the moms who have used them can offer some advice.

My mom said she used walking rings for both my sister and I and we turned out just fine
