Moving baby from cot to bed

Morning ladies

Just wanted to say thanks again for all the awesome advice.
My daughter has spent this week sleeping on her bed or mattress on the floor. And she LOVES it. We had an awesome week, with nap times been much easier.

I also put a mirror up like some suggested, and well, the talking never stops in our house now.

I seriously can not believe the difference I am seeing in her.

We will be spending the weekend baby proofing her room and the house because she has started tummy crawling to get to the other baby in the mirror.

My cousin put her 2 kids straight onto a bed (futon on the floor) at 6 months each. They both sleep through the night and take themselves to bed when they're tired.

She has a baby safe gate on the doorway and has baby proofed the rooms. Plus she put a mirror on the wall next to the bed so baby plays and talks with the "other" baby and gives her a bit more time in bed. Also encourages independence and self soothing.

This is a very Montessori way of doing things...I wish I had done it this way and will be with the next one. You can even use a small mattress...doesn't have to be full size.

I am very lucky as far as her room goes. She has the warmest room in the house. It hardly every goes below 21 degrees.
It is fully carpeted and she has one of those heating panels on the wall. So no worries about the cold.

I hope it goes well My only issue at the moment it that being on the floor it is chilly so perhaps you could put a rug down under her mattress (this might sound cheap but a layer of flattened cardboard boxes covered by a rug might be even cheaper because paper insulates so well). If she's not rolling off during naps, I might be inclined to see how she goes on the normal bed at night. Babies are clever, you'll just have to start teaching her to scoot off backwards when she wakes up.

The bed which we have in her room now is the top half of a set of bunk beds. So it does have a rail, just not very high. She sleeps in a sleeping bag, so I am not sure how mobile she will be once the crawling starts. And it looks like she is going to start soon.

It's not only our bed that she sleeps better in. If I put her down on her bed in the day, she takes nice long naps. Put her in her cot and if she wakes up she gets all upset and will not go back to sleep. If she wakes up on the bed, all I have to do is give her her dummy back and within seconds she is fast asleep again.

It's a rather long bed, and the one end is covered in all her teddies. I am starting to wonder if she just views the bed as a happier place. Her cot is rather small, no room for teddies and her. At first I thought the teddies would be a distraction, and would keep her awake, but no.

@ Sarah, I like the way you think. I might just give that a try tonight and see how things go. Put the mattress on the floor. We have a baby gate separating our bedrooms from the living areas ( to keep the dogs at bay ), so once she is mobile I could just move that to her door way.

Hmmm sounds like a plan.

My 7 month old daughter sleeps better in a bed. She has a full-size mattress on the floor and next to the mattress the pillows. So if she rolls off (never has, except off the big bed whilst she was playing) she doesn't go far. She sleeps MUCH better. If you make sure her room is totally babyproofed, either close the door or better yet put a babygate across her bedroom door then if she does get off then she can't hurt herself or wander out. I believe that if they are accustomed to bed sleeping from young then there is none of the huge excitement and testing of boundaries that you get with a toddler recently moved from cot to bed. My daughter comes to work with me and sleeps on a toddler bed there and has not yet rolled off.
