Colic @ 5 1/2 months??!!

Hi, sounds like you have covered all bases. I agree, very frustrating!

I also think Losec takes a while to work, my LG had to start using it at 4 weeks old.

I would get a second opinion on that hernia. They can cause problems and pain. I also had it, but it was only corrected surgically at 5 yrs old.

I don't know how you manage without sleep, it nearly killed me and my marriage ... Hope you have lots of help. You are in my prayers.

Chan, my paed also said the Losec will work immediately but it really only started showing a difference after about 2 weeks.

With us, Nathan doesnt sleep during the day and would just moan, but now at least if he doesnt sleep he is happy and cheerful.

Julz - He was put on Losec for 5 days and it didn't make a difference. Paed said if it hadn't worked then to stop it?? Not sure how long they need to be on it before you see a difference?

Kade is perfect during the day. A really happy chappy. His tummy starts making horrible noises around 6pm at night. But he still goes down between 7:30 and 8pm every night. I don't need to rock or sing or anything. He just lies on me bed and goes to sleep on his own. He normally sleeps until 11 then has a feed and get him back down quite quickly.

Then you can hear his tummy making noises from his cot next to our bed. Then he moans and moves etc and as the noises get louder so does his moaning and he is eventually thrashing around in the cot.

He starts passing gas around 5:30am and once he's gotten that all out by 6am he's up and smiling and laughing and a really happy happy baby.

So there's no tv before bed, no toys or mobiles in our room.

We've been to 2 paed's and they both say colic???

Frankie we have tested a sample of his stool and he's not lactose intolerent. There was also no bad bacteria in him. He's on 2 different probiotics a day to get different strains of good bacteria into him.

Girly - He's been to 2 paed's and our GP who check his ears everytime we visit them so i'm sure they would have picked something up.

He sleeps with the cot on bricks and a pillow under the mattress so he is as upright as he can be.

Kade has an umbilical hernia. It's really big. Sticks out about 5/6cm. I still think that has something to do with all his tummy problems. If you push that hernia back in you must hear the horrible squishy noises. But every doc we've been to has assured us it cannot cause any problems.

I've insisted on x-rays but the paeds say if there were problems with his colon etc he would present with more symptoms and he's not. Also he would suffer with the cramps etc in the day as well but it's only at night.

ARGH - so frustrating but like the doc's say - with time it will get better!! Not what you want to hear when you're surviving on 2 hours of broken sleep a night!!!

It doesnt sound right to me hun.
Have you considered gonig for a 2nd opinion? Maybe time to start insisting on some x-rays or something that can rule out all other things?

Or what about seeing an ENT? Maybe a severe ear infection that's causing a lot of pain?

Have you tried lying him in a more upright position? Just thinking out loud.


I just cant believe that non stop crying can be purely colic. Something must be causing it.

Aaww shame, I know the feeling. Our colic problems ended at 3 months thank heavens. I agree about the reflux, have they ruled out gastric obstruction by doing an x-ray, lactose intolerance, blood tests for allergies? Have you tried a probiotic to restore the intestinal flora? Just trying to think of possible problems. Good luck!

Have they ruled out refulx and silent refulx? I know that some kids can have colic longer than others although 3 months is the usualy time frame. I am just trying to think what could cause so much stress in this little man's life. If they have ruled out all of the physiological causes then it may be environmental or emotional causes like over stimulation and some kids are really sensitive. What are the iron levels like?

It could be a light or a lack of light. (more often too much light though). It may be the texture of their clothing or the tag at the back of the clothes. It may be a mobile in the cot or the room might be too bright or too busy. These can all be stress factors so you may want to consult an infant psychologist or therapist who can help you with these issus. Someone like Anne richardson. We also know that tired parents (I was one, almost needed to be placed in hospital for sleep therapy) become very stressed and this alone can result in a colic baby.

what worked with Dylan was no TV at night, no lights, being held, very soft music with a continuous simple melody. I made one up and sand it to him over and over. Demand feeding to start with (he was on the breast). butternut was fine, but things like brocolli etc were not a good idea although Dylan had sensory colic and not cramping.

You say you have been to the paed??? We tend to assume that it is colic when he could have an ear infection that would bug him so maybe rule that out too.

I was just wondering if anyone also battled with colic for so long?

My son is now 5.5 months old and his tummy is crampy from 6pm to 6am. We hardly get any sleep every single night and can't feed him cereal becuase it makes the cramping worse and he can't eat veg in the evenings because it does the same.

I'm seriously at my witts end with this. We've got Dr Brown's bottles, do tummy massages, use Bennets and Karshargens colic mixtures. Been to a chiropractor with him 5/6 times and seen a homeopath 5 times.

I'd kill for 4-5 hours of solid sleep!!!
