I went to the Pead yesterday, and my LB is doing very well *(besides the colic)

He was on the S26 gold formula and he suggested the Novalac AC - which is for colic babies. He hasnt even been on the formula for a day yet and he seems a lot more calmer. I am going to leave it for 3 days (thats how long babies usually take to adjust to the new formula) and then form a decision.

My specialist says not to assume you or your child are lactose int. as it may result in an lack of calcium that the body needs so always seek a diagnosis through testing.

As far as I am aware lactose int is unusual in infants. They rather have a milk allergy that clears by age 2.

I thought Dylan had a milk allergy. Paed said no. Tests confirmed his thoughts so while moms usually know best they don't always.

You know meags, I was thinking about you the other day after reading a blog post about a moms journey into allergies with her little boy. Her experience was so much like yours(the exception was he latched okay but would scream and arch in pain, had chronic diarheoa, and was failing to hrive. The paeds wanted her to stop bf, but she refused and started an elimination diet before going for full allergy tests on her lb, but what was interesting is that she had herself tested at the same time because she was bfding and she came back positive intolerant to milk and gluten, but it was much milder. When she stopped eating the allergens, not only did her lo improve, but she found all her IBS, skin problems and mood swings also disappeared. In the US it was an osteopath that ran the allergy tests.... I'll see if I can find the link.

This is my experience (I am in USA).
My baby screamed high pitched scream from the time we got back from the hospital up to 4 months old. In that time the paed told me "it's colic...it'll pass". He would drink a bit, scream, arch his back and was constantly stiff. He never relaxed. He could stand up on his legs from 5 days old because he was always stiff!

We treated the reflux (arching back etc) we took him to chiropractors (they have to manipulate the back...) and we tried every conceivable colic medication out there. I refused to believe it was "just colic". we had to rock him for hours on end before he slept. he screamed for 10 hours every day, sometimes more.

Finally I asked the paed to refer us to a paediatric gastroenterologist as even the reflux was still uncontrolled and we had tried 2 different prescription meds and gaviscon. He also always had diarrhoea (paed was convinced I didnt know the difference between breastmilk poo and diarrhoea...)

anyway. we ended up increasing his reflux meds. they dont do allergy tests here. So when we went to france to visit family, we did the allergy test there. we found out he is allergic to dairy and soy. we put him on a formula that has hydrolysed milk proteins that generally kids can tolerate but he didnt. so after a month on that he is now on a highly specialised formula.

anyway. no more arching of the back. no more shrieking every time he feeds. no more colic. no more diarrhoea.
i had been telling the paed from day 5 I'm sure there is a milk allergy. the mom must trust her instincts and insist on tests if she thinks its necessary.

Good Morning,

Just out of curiosity, how many times would you give your baby the bennets colic mixture a day?

I give my son the mixture once a day, sometimes it seems he needs it during the day as well. I don't want to give it to him more than once a day, as he really does get sleepy

Did your baby cramp after every feed?

How do you know if your baby is lactose intolerant?

can being lactose intolerant be hereditary? His daddy was lactose intolerant and on the goats milk... could it be possible that some babies are incorrectly diagnosed with colic but are actually lactose intolerant or have other problems? I know the docs generally blame everything on colic? it is very confusing and scary...

I gave birth via c-section. A lot of people told us to take our baby to a chiropractor that specialises in babies. We did that when she was about 4 weeks old, and it did help a bit. We tried everything, from Gripewater to telament drops and nothing seemed to work. Our clinic sister then advised us to use Bennets Colis & stomach cramp mixture. Worked like a bomb and became my best friend.

It didn't knock her out, but it did help her sleep a little better.

I would suggest she have her checked out at a good paed as it could be a number of things like ear infection, reflux ect

good luck to her, it is hard having a colicy baby
