I have used an amber teething necklace since Skye was 8 weeks old. She is now 15 months. I have taken it off once (for 2 days) and those were a horrid 2 days with a miserable baby!
She was a little fussy with her first 2 teeth, nothing serious, didn't use any meds, the next 4 have popped through without us even noticing. We have never had drool! My daughter is a very calm, happy baby, although this could just be her temperament. I have however noticed a difference in the amount of drool and fussiness (less) of my 15 month old charge when he started wearing one.
There should not be any elastic in the necklaces. A good amber necklace should be threaded on thick necklace string, each bead should be knotted on to the string individually and there should be a screw closed clasp.
Amber is a natural substance, so if bitten hard enough they could crack it and swallow a piece, but being natural it shouldn't cause any digestive problems and the pieces are so small there shouldn't be a choking hazard. It is better to discourage the biting / chewing as they are not designed to be chewed. Amber works by releasing natural oils onto the skin which are then absorbed.
I got mine from Taryn Turner in Durban (drmom.co.za) but I also know of earthbabies.co.za, teethingtots and
