Has your Dr discussed with you different foods to feed him because some can cause reflux to get worse. Examples are :citrus or acidic foods, rice, corn, peas, dairy, cabbage etc. These foods tend to ferment or cause gas which irritates the gut and cause additional acid in the stomach. If you are using cereal, try and use quinoa based cereals, not wheat, corm or rice based. Smaller meals, more often is the best option. Avo is awesome as a high calorie food which means your baby will take in more calories in a smaller amount.

Also, try more solid or whole foods rather than puree or mashed food. Do you use a thickened formula? That does also help. Perhaps his meds need to be changed or the dosage changed or given at a different time?

If it's any consolation, I have looked after reflux babies and toddlers, I understand how stressfull it is and how you worry when they seem to vomit up what seems like everything they've JUST eaten or drunk.

My baby girl only weighs 9kg at 15 months and she's not got reflux, yet she weighed 3.3kg at birth and was nearly 7kg by 5months and from 9 months or so hasn't really put on any weight - its perfectly normal.

hi. my son was diagnosed with it at 2 weeks of age. he is on solids and he drinks about 90mls in a bottle 6 times in 24 hours. he is on medication since 2weeks if age and it never really seems to help. according to all the specialists that see him he is overweight. so he gets weighed twice a month and i am forever being told to feed him more which i can't he eat breakfast and then has a snack then has lunch and has a snack. supper then a snack before bed.

Jean eats like a dream but to keep the food down is a different story. he alto vomits the sold food out.

we go again on Tuesday to red cross hospital.

Hi chantz,

Malia had bad reflux from the moment she was born, however it got better the momentshe got onto solid. And when she sarted being more mobile around 8 months, it would seem like she wasnt getting much weight, she is almost 13 months old and only weighs 9.2k, so your baby's weight sounds fine to me. i guess it should be ok unless there is a drastic change to the way your LO had been gaining weight.

like sarah said, if it were reflux, you would notice it. at least that what my paed said, and your child seems to like his bottles, although you havent mentioned any solids nor the quantity of milkh he drinks.

To keep me from going insane, I only weigh once a month, unless there is a reason to do it more often and lately she hasnt been gaining much. and the nurse said, as long as the child is thriving, it's ok. My paed nurse told me that because she moves more, she is more likely to gain less weight/week.

How much weight has been lost? Has your baby perhaps become more active and possibly grown taller at the same time?

Babies often start to loose a little bit of weight once they become more active, if they have started crawling or walking then eating is not as much interest so they might eat a little less initially, and do't forget it is summer and very hot so eating is not as pleasant - perhaps try yoghurt and puree fruit ice-lollies as a way of getting food in that is nourishing, fun and cooling :)

If it is reflux, I think you would have seen signs of it earlier as reflux often gets better once baby is sitting, a little bit more mobile and starting solids.

Typically a reflux baby can be irritable after a milk feed, often cries when lying down, may vomit either in little bits or projectile, has a sour smell from their mouth, arches back when crying, refuses to eat or drink, prefers to 'snack' on small amounts of food / milk more often throughout the day etc.

Hi Chantz,

my daughter had quite bad reflux and it got much better at around 6 months. I t hink each baby is different, but my paed said most baby's suffer less at aroudn 6 months.

Has your baby started crawling or walking yet, perhaps he needs to calories per day.

Although Paige's weight didnt drop when she started crawling and walking it did level off and stay pretty constant.

I think it depends how much weight he has lost and how long its been going on.

Sorry I couldnt be of more assistance
