It think it's quite stupid... Like you said if they want to drink they will...

I agree education is the best way to go...but it will still not help...if they want to drink they will...

I know that alcoholism isn't something you can easily give up...but you get some women that will continue partying even when they do not have a problem!

It's just sad how selfish some women can be... I don't think it's asking much to give up excessive drinking for 9 months if it could effect your child for the rest of their life!

The better solution would be more education, Have flyers in all the clinics detailing (in all our languages!) what FAS is, and causes etc.

I was under the impression that the most damage in foetal alcohol syndrome is in the first trimester? Therefore a person doesn't even look pregnant in that stage?

This law is obviously motivated by good intentions, but they will have to work on a better solution to help prevent foetal alcohol syndrome.

A nurse friend of mine works at a government hospital doing research.
She is currently researching the correlation between cot-death and foetal-alcohol syndrom.
She has been there just over a year, and so now is dealing with the young babies as well as pregnant women.
She says the amount of babies with foetal-alcohol syndrom is staggering!
It is really scary, so I kinda get where they are coming from.
Having a drink occasionally while pregnant is ok, but these women are going to the extreme.
But, I agree, this tactic is not going to accomplish anything - there are far too many loopholes.

And yes Missesmom, if they stop selling alcohol - why no cigarettes too?

I so agree with all your points.

I am pregnant with my third child and have the odd glass of wine or bubbly.

The unfortunate truth is that if someone is going to drink to the point of FAS they do not have to purchase the alcohol themselves. They are likely in an environment where everyone around them drinks excessively.

So JHB wants to make it illegal to sell Alcohol to pregnant women - in some sill theory I suppose it makes sense - dont sell to them, they cant drink. I have a major issue with this law for several reasons..

1 - How is the store clerk supposed to tell if the person is pregnant, or just has some extra tummy weight?
2 - its actually NOT illegal to drink while pregnant, and my own Dr told me the odd drink was 100% fine - so why should I be denied my savanna light (which has less alcohol than most gripe water)
3 - um, if a Pregnant women wants to get drunk she can very easiely get someone else to buy for her.
4 - what is she wants to buy a bottle for a friend, or her hubby?
5 - why alcohol and not ciggaretes?
