question-circle When to move your baby to his own bed?

Thanks ladies, much appreciated.

My hubby and I are both worried that he might roll off the bed. We like the idea of putting him on the mattress but might just exchange his single bed for a double bed.
I think for now, we will move him into his own room in his cot and see how it goes. Really want to try push through to a year before moving him onto a bed.

Thanks again :)

I moved the boys when they started climbing out their cots by themselves, but my SIL had her daughter in a double bed almost from birth and it worked for them - they rolled up a duvet up to keep her on the far side of the bed, next to the wall

What I noticed with the boys was that they would pull themselves up in their sleep, especially when learning to walk, almost as if they practiced in their sleep, so I was very wary about moving them too early.

But 1st timer's suggestion of a mattress on the floor might be the best option if he really does not like the cot mattress

We did own room from birth and bed from about 19 months. Best thing we ever did. I would just be careful until they are a bit older than 6m or get high rails as baby might get onto his haunches at night and then fall off. Otherwise out the mattress on the floor and a duvet next to it incase he rolls.

Hi Chanz

I have done some research on this recently.
Most websites suggest between 18m and 3yrs.
A friend of mine moved her boy at 9months and it worked well for him.
But I think 6m is a bit early.

Once they can walk and can be more aware of their surroundings eg when waking in the middle of the night and not rolling around on the bed and falling off the end for example then it becomes more of an option.
K is 20months and we will move her to a bed as soon as we've moved house (coming month). We would've done it at 18m but dont want too many changes before the move.

First angel resting 25/06/2009 stayed with us a short 7 weeks but we still miss you.

Goodmorning ladies

Michael is now 6 months old. He has been sleeping in our room in his cot since birth since he was prem. And also because his room didnt have aircon for summer. so with winter settling in,we want to move his cot back into his own room.
Now my dilemma,he sleeps so much better on a bed than in a cot. Now when he was in NICU they would put him on soft pillows and baby mattresses at home are not as soft.
Do you think its safe or ok to put him on his own bed with a railing on the side?

Would appreciate some advice especially from moms who have done this before :)
