Anyone taken their baby to a Chiropractor to treat reflux?

My lo is 6 weeks old and has been diagnosed with Reflux and has been on Nexiam for 1 week now. There has been major improvements and the Meds are obviously helping - I give him half a sachet in the morning and half late afternoon when he begins fussing and showing signs of discomfort. The nexium is working well on the acid but lo still throws up and it is clearly uncomfortable for him and still disturbs his sleep.

I too am one of those mommies who would rather not have her baby on Meds if I can help it, so I've done some research and came across using a Chiropractor to help with the Reflux. Has anyone else tried this and how successful was it? Also could you recommend a reputable Chiropractor in Cape Town?

Hi Everyone

Thanks for the help on the reflux. Matthew was stacks better on the Colief and Nexium as a combination. He's now weaned off the colief and only having half a nexium packet every other day so everything is going well. I can't even remember how bad it was, I think my brain has blanked it out of my memory. I'm just so happy that he isn't in continuous pain anymore. He's a totally different baby now.

Thanks again. It's nice to have the support when you need it.

Shame, I can completely understand where you are at. It's so hard because as a mommy we just want to make them better. Reflux is a terrible thing especially when they are small.

My son had really severe reflux. He could never keep a feed down. Unfortunately we only picked it up at around 6-8 weeks and I got some wrong advice to stop breastfeeding (because people thought my let down reflex wasn't kicking in). I then put my son on reflux formulaes. I REALLY regret it to this day. Because it never made a difference really. The more I was trying to get him to drink from me the more he was fighting.

Anyway I realize now breast is best especially for reflux because breastmilk is absorbed easily and quick so it doesn't lie in the stomach to build up acid. Nexium works really well. Bearing in mind Losec and Nexium works differently. My son was so much easier when we started the nexium, he settled and the crying calmed down. Also what helped was to feed on demand and frequently. Obviously keep him upright after feeds. I would suggest a baby carrier if you can because your body heat will really help soothe.

The good news, they do grow out of it. Some kids just quicker than others. But I must warn though that when they get sick with flu etc... that the reflux gets worse. When you start solids later, it may help or may not. My son is now 13 months and still struggles at times. But we stopped the nexium at around 6months.

Sleeping arrangements- for us we tried letting him sleep in his own room because of how people put "pressure" on him needing his own space blah blah blah. It never worked for us, Michael used to choke when vomitting and we couldn't sleep with that thought. In the end I followed what worked for us, Michael slept by us and he slept so much better too nevermind us getting some sleep too LOL

Goodluck and just know it really will get better :)

My LG is 4 months and been on Nexium for a month now. Made a huge difference. Saw the pead again yesterday and he has given us another script but said that it does peak at around 4 months so we can't stop the meds yet. We are starting solids next week and he said this should improve the situation drastically.

I am combination feeding - formula in the day when I am at work and breast when I am at home - the pead reckons an anti-reflux (AR) formula helps too if you are willing to combination feed.

Good luck

Shame, I completely understand, I didn't want to give Paige medication as well, but she just wasn't feeding well and gaining weight so sometimes its just about the lessor of two evils. Paige came off the medication after about 2 months and it never seemed to have an adverse affect.

Good luck and let us know how it goes

Thanks Niki

I went back to the paediatrician and he prescribed us Nexiam. I'm now just worried that this is a fairly serious medicine and I don't want to dose him to heavily at such a young age. On the other hand I can't stand seeing him in constant pain. I guess I'll give in and go for the meds.

Hi Mckkim,

Sorry to hear your struggling, My daughter also had terrible reflux, but hang in there it does come to an end around 3- 4 months. Try to stick with the breastfeeding, as breast milk really is best.

Our Pead prescribed Losec and it worked really well, I expressed a little milk into a bottle and dissolved the tablet once a day and it made a huge difference, then the rest of the feeds were at the breast- if I were you I would go see your Pead again and ask for something else, perhaps losec as the Gaviscon isn't working any more

From what I have read, Losec has a longer lasting effect , but does take a day or two to start working ( well that was my experience)

Good luck
