Definitely the nappies. The newborn one flies! The small things you can buy every month.

The big stuff is definately last to buy. the carseat and cot is probably the most important. None of my children used the pram as babies. Lol weird.

oh and wait to hear babies sex before you buy clothing. i know its tempting to start buying. I am 14 weeks and can not walk past the clothes! That is if you want to know...

@4May - Congrats on the pregnancy! I am a first time mommy to be and totally understand the daunting task ahead where you have to decide what to buy, how much of it and when to start buying!! I went to the shops and fell over backwards when I saw just how much stuff there is for babies! I just thought seriously does one tiny baby need so many things?? LOL

But what we did was wait till 14 weeks before we started buying anything. Then only did we start looking out for specials on the big stuff that costs allot like the pram/car seat combo, cot, bath, baby monitor, etc. Only about two months ago did we start buying baby products like wet wipes when it came on special (btw Makro has an amazing special now for wet wipes). I don't want to buy too many of those type of products cause normally on a baby shower you get loads of baby products and clothes. So we also put away a bit of money each month and will do some bulk buying after the babyshower!

What I did hear to make sure you get the most out of babyshower gifts is to specify what is needed like for a friend of mine she said she wanted 3-6 months summer clothes and 6-12 winter that way she was sorted for the correct season clothes for a year.

Stocking up on nappies when there is a good deal, is fantastic.

4May – Congratulations on your pregnancy. Seeing that I am a 1st time mom I sat myself down and I googled like a mad thing trying to get an idea what a baby needs. So my advice would be to try and get all the big things like the travel system, cot / carry cot, monitor, breast pump (if you will be breastfeeding) you can go onto takealot.com they have some great specials on baby stuff.

Then after buying all the expensive stuff, I started buying a pack of nappies and a product every time we went shopping (some people would not do this as you never know what baby’s skin can handle or not) so I have decided to get a pick ‘n pay and Clicks voucher and I put money on the cards every month so that I can go and buy the stuff when he is born

Fairychild – you can never have enough nappies, if you have too many of one size they exchange them at Baby City for bigger sizes.

Stella K – I have to agree with you to wait until the baby shower. I never bought any clothes for my little man because someone said to me I should wait until after the shower and I am so glad I did. We are sorted with clothes for the 1st year of his life.

Oh buy as many wipes as you can!!!!

The big ticket items are of course the cot, stroller/travel system and car seat. If you are splurging, a bassinet or small rocker is a nice thing to have. We used the Tiny Love vibrating rocker. Both my girls loved it, and my nephew is currently using ours:)

Another nice to have, but I almost want to say essential big ticket item is a comfortable rocking armchair that you can use to sit with baby when feeding and rock him to sleep, unless you are going to be one of those lucky ones that you just put baby down and s/he sleeps Then you just need a comfortable armchair.

On the smaller items, you can go crazy and buy every gadget and gimmick out there, or just focus on the essentials. There is sooo much stuff out there.

The one thing I definitely recommend is a properly stocked medicine case, with things like fever and pain meds, teething gels/powders, plasters, arnica gel, rash cream, saline spray, infant illiadin, etc, etc. Best to get this closer to the time, so that meds don't expire within 3 months of having baby. Also, you will need to get what is age appropriate now, and replace with other meds as s/he gets older.

Keep in mind that you will have a baby shower, so don't buy everything yet, as people may want to give you some nice things as gifts.

plan ahead and go buy these at a baby expo where you get lots of discounts.

if you co-sleep, you will not need a cot, if you baby wear you will rather get a stretchy wrap that a pram.
with my 2nd baby i got a stretchy wrap, and it is definitely the best baby item i ever had

wait for your baby shower before you buy to much, i got absolutely everything i needed and luxuries.

i cloth diaper so didn't need to stock up on nappies.
