thanks ladies, must say after reading your comments im relaxed. the nanny said yesterday she had a difficult day cause we had changed LO feeding pattern. I just said to reduce the solids she gives her. Cause after she eats she wants her bottle and has a four and five hour gap in between before her next feed.

2kidmamma: wow congrats on your LO your doing so well

Yoza and Lydia

I seriously would not worry about it. Esspecially not You Yoza considering that your baby was over 4Kg's at Birth. My Son was tiny at birth 2.6Kg and by the age of 5 months like your he weighed over 10Kg's. Neither my Clinic Sister, Pead or G.P were concerned as he was within the correct percentile according to his Age, height and head Circumference. Before you take that clinic sister's 2 cents worth I would rather as mentioned have a second opinion to bring into account your babies other physical attributes. I would not even contemplate dieting. If he is eating 3 regular sized meals if she is on solids (porridge, Fruit & veg and drinking her regular milk feeds) then this would be considered perfectly normal. There is a wonderful Peadiatric Dietician in Somerset West Deborah Hoepfl I can recommend but that is the only one I know of.

hello...

Yoza- i went to the clinic today for my LO vaccination. he now weighs 8.3kg's and he is 17 weeks today.
the nurse @ the clinic was not too concerned aswell. she just said i shud put off giving him solids [cereal, soft porridge ect...] until he is 6 months. i must just give him his formula as normal. she also advised i can substitute it will those purity juices as a snack during the day.

i guess for now there in nothing to worry about. :)

lydia: I must say your LO is as big as mine at that age. I remember my pead not stressing or worrying as well. At that time i was exclusivley breastfeeding. Every one one in my family says i was a big baby and bear in mind i was always big and hubby is quite hefty as well.

reluctant mum: i will start today to keep the diary as of today. we have dedided to reduce the food portions of the food. as for the formula feeds she will get 2x150ml a day.

I am now expressing when I get home so that she gets a bottle of expressed milk which is 200ml a day.

As of yesterday her last feed was at 5:30pm and slept till 23:00pm woke up for a feed BM. at 3am woke tried giving her water. no luck. I BF then woke up at 6am.

So will see how it goes today.

Shame my nanny is so stressed about baby being overweight.

Thanks ladies. ill talk to my pead when i go for the 6month check up. i hope her weight gain stabilises.

yoza - I really would pop along to a paed or another clinic sister for a second opinion, before you get yourself all stressed.

As Julz said it might be a case of looking at food type rather than frequency. But weight gain is an issue for kids, and if left unattended can lead to other issues.

Try not to get stressed about the idea of "diet" - but rather focus on what your baby is consuming and her portion sizes.

Also looking at what else your LG eats/drinks - maybe keep an accurate "food diary" for two weeks - literally everything that goes in.

And then take this and your LG and go and see a clinic or paed for a second opinion and then take it from there.

No one wants to hear their LO is over/under weight and we all get very defensive when a medical person throws this term around and immediately start blaming ourselves.

hi ladies,

Yoza, i have the same problem [if you may call it that] when my son went for his vacc @ # month he was 7.79kg's! and mind you he had noly been on formula for 2 weeks. i had exclusively breastfed... however wen i took him for his 3 month check up with his pead, she said i shudnt worry just as yet. from wat she cud tell he is a genetically big baby because not only is he big, but he is tall as well and his head seems big. basically his body is in propostion. she did however say i needs to watch his weight although @ this point there is very little that u can do. u cant put a 3-4 month old baby on a diet.
but just go the clinic and find out wat the sister has got to say
my LO is going for his vacc tomorrow again and im just holding my breath

Is he on solids yet?
Breastfed or formula? If formula are you following the guidelines?
Also how tall is he? Ie is he overweight for his height?

My son is 9kg and just shy of 4m. He's exclusively breastfed and tall so the paed says it's fine. A lot of this "fat baby" talk is BS. They lose it when they get active. I would suggest you go see the clinic sister and see what she has to say. If he was 4.25 at birth though he may just be a big baby. A dietician is as Julz says also a good idea if he is on solids already.
