Hi there. I started a baby food company a year ago. my nutritionist recomended that you start with veggies rather than cereal.

take a veg at a time and give it to baby for about 3/4 days, to give you change to see if baby might have an reaction to that specific veg.

you can mix the veg with a little of babies' milk, for a creamier, more fimiliar taste.

as soon as you feel satisfied with babies' eating habbits you may start to mix your veggies.

I did rice cereal 1st but he got constipated (it still constipates him)
But I was reading something yest which said that sweet potatoe, banana, avocado, pear, peach are all great 1st foods coz they are easily digested. Steaming peach & pear is advised.
I';; try that with the next baby....

I started Liam on rice cereal but he doesn't seem to like it so the other day i gave him butternut and he eats it nicely. I will also give him sweet potatoes and gem squash

I've started with baby marrow and spinach, which I hold in my hand and then he grabs my hand and pulls it closer. He's face is quite priceless, he kinda gags at first and then he munches most of it. Also he cant decide if he wants to suck or chew.... CUTE
I must add my baby is 5 1/2 mnths though.

I started with rice cereal because I mixed it with breastmilk for the familiar taste.
after that I started with veggies. all the yellow veg first and then all the other colours one at a time so they get used to the taste of that specific veg.

I was also not keen to start on rice cereal however after speaking to my paed and doing some research I did. The reason was that my son started cereal at 4m2w which is quite early and my husband has both ecsma (sp?) and asthma so we were very worried about J having food allergies. The paed and research I did all confirmed that the gluten etc free rice cereal is the more hypoallergenic. I also intend to keep J on just milk and cereal for as long as possible so will not be introducing other solids in the near future. If you have no history of allergies etc then you should be fine but just remember 4m is actually very young for anything other than milk. Just my 2c :)
