Constipation in newborn

Hi memo, yes she is exclusively bottlefed as she never actually breastfed her.

I just feel for the lo as it is NOT nice be constipated & full of cramps.

So is the newborn exclusively bottlefed?

I also told her that IF she is not happy with S26, she might want to try Lactogen as I know it is a good formula & Novolac is also extremely good, it is very expensive because you only get it in a small tin.

I think this is why I also bought the Novolac IT so that it can sort out the constipation & hopefully quickly & to make that transition from S26 to another formula as easy as possible.
My daughter was on Nan but it caused her alot of reflux & acid. Her pediatrician changed her to Novolac AR when she was almost 3 months & it sorted out the problem within days as she didn't throw up as much & the acid went a way completely. He said that I could change her back to Nan immediately once the problem was sorted out but I loved Novolac so much that I just put her on the normal Novolac & it worked for her.

I know my cousin had both her sons on Lactogen but she struggled with the 2nd child as Lactogen wasn't working for him as he wanted to drink constantly & she put him on Novolac Sweet dreams & just like that he was sorted.

We will see if she is going to put her on Lactogen after she finished the Novolac

It sounds to me that the formula she is drinking is not right for her little tummy. I could be wrong, but in many cases this could be the cause. They could try a different formula first and should this not help within a day or 2, the best would be to take her to the docter asap. I know many moms is not keen on Lactogen, but this formula is very soft on their tummies and also low on risk with cramps and constipation and also not that expensive. My child was put on Lactogen from the beginning and we had no problems, because he also struggled to get milk by breast feeding from me. Best not to keep this problem going on to long.

Just forgot to mention that the baby is NOT on medical aid as the mother is jobless & the bf is the only one working at the moment & he is also NOT on a medical aid.

I need as much imput from all you mommies as possible.

My sister-in-law had her BG a week ago & tried breastfeeding in the hospital put she was apparently very lazy in drinking & so they gave her bottle instead.

She was put on S26 & she is battling with her since she got home.

She doesn't sleep right. She will maybe sleep like 3-4 hours here & there, which is normal for a newborn but she will also sleep only for 20 minutes or an hour & be awake for more than 3 hours or so, which just doesn't make sense to me.

She was apparently awake from 1 o'clock yesterday morning until 8 in the morning - SOMETHING IS DEFINITELY NOT RIGHT!!!

I've asked her so many questions, like how much does she drink, how often, is she warm enough, is she burping her often etc etc.

She is definitely constipated & that can obviously cause alot of cramps, spasms & discomfort & that can cause her not to sleep properly.

The other worry she has is that she is constantly sucking her hands & not sure if she isn't getting enough milk in.

I've given her a trick in getting the poop out as it can't stay in & it is looks like mice poop when it comes out....

What I want to know is what advice would you give in solving this problem?

We took her to dischem last night so that she can get buscopan just to relieve the little one's pain as I know it is safe for her. I also told her to give some tissue salts before each feed to help with wind etc. I also bought Novolac IT for her as it is for constipation & I know Novolac very well as my daughter was on it until she was 1 1/2 years old & I know Novolac can be used in conjuction with any formula. I told her to start of by replacing one bottle of novolac with the s26 bottle & so forth until she is just on Novolac & if that sorts out the problem she can continue using it for a while & then slowly put her back on s26 or maybe changing to something else.

I'm not a fan of switching formulas too quickly as I know each baby to suffer from constipation from time to time & their digestive system needs to get used to the formula BUT the baby is in a lot of discomfort, not sleeping properly, mommy is not getting any sleep at all as the baby wants to be in her arms to whole time...........

We also bought her those probi-flora sachets for her to put in the milk so that she can just get some good bacteria in as it also won't cause harm.
