Constipation in newborn

Hi there,
This sounds very similiar to my case. We eventually worked out that my son is Lactose Intolerant - He has been on S26-LF since around 7 weeks or so. I wouldn't suggest going onto any of the S26 ranges at this stage as apparently S26 will not be made anymore (some story about Aspen making the S26 formula's under licence from Wyeth USA - and Wyeth now being sold or something to that effect to Pfizer SA) not sure what the entire story is.

Also Telement drops for the cramps and wind did wonders for my son. A few drops to his bottles and he was sorted. Shame man, hope your SIL sorts out baba soon. Not fun. Wishing her lots of luck.

@GML - i heard somewhere that Honey isn't good for babies under 1? Or have I gotten my lines muddled up somewhere. Either way, it seemed to work for your little cutie. So I'm sure all good. I told my SIL that it does take some time for the baby to get used to the milk & sometimes the milk does make them constipated.
I only advised her to put her on Novolac IT as it does work wonders & because Novolac is very soft on their tummies & you can chip n change between different formulas.

I also thought that her not sleeping right that it can be due to her not feeding enough & all the cramps going on there in her little tummy.

I also told my SIL to give her more milk & then see how much she drink then. You can't restrict your lo from milk because you think she is not allowed to drink more because she is still so small - I don't believe in that at all & I told her!

My paed also adviced me that time when my lo was small to use that feeding method you just described now & it is a good guideline.

My son was also very constipated after birth. we battled for the first 2 to 3 weeks with him.

Both the GP and paed said that S26 is the best for constipated tummies.
So we changed from Nan to s26 and havent had problems since.

But before the s26 started working we gave him 100ml of cooled boiled water with 1 teaspoon of brown sugar or honey. This worked like a bomb.

As for the child not getting enough milk, Our pead suggested that give a normal feed and if he finishes it then give another 25ml. If he doesnt finish the extra 25ml then you know he is getting enough from the first feed. If he does finish the 25ml then you know that you need to increase the feed by 25ml.

As for him not sleeping I think it may have something to do with both the constipation and not getting enough milk.

I know how hard it can be since I went through this myself for the first month of my sons life. I hope she finds a solution soon

@Vamo - It is a never ending battle with all these different formulas.
What drops did the paed perscribe?

I think the Novolac will start to help with the constipation & when she's finished with that tin, she can then maybe look at a better formula than S26

I also told her a few days ago to go to a clinic, even Dischem's one is very good.

Can you remember how much milk did your lo drink when he was about a week old as I feel like she is also restricting the lo in drinking more & to me, if your baby is hungry, give MORE!!!
That can also be a small reason for the constipation.

@memo - She is at home now & they gave her tablets to dry up her milk

It is just very sad for a new mommy not to have that support in a hospital.

If I knew then what I know now, I wouldn't have put my son on S26. He battled with constipation until wait a sec, he is still battling with it at 19 months since I didn't change formula but just grinded my teeth

He's been on S26 No1 since 17 days old, at 6 month I moved him to No2 and now he is on No3. They say its kinda rich and that is why some LOs struggle with constipation. My son's Paed prescribed some drops which I'd add every second day to his feed.

Maybe ur SIL needs to really change to another formula coz it doesn't seem right that the baby isn't getting some sleep. It might not just be the formula but maybe something else as well. She can even take LG to a public clinic and expalin her case.

Shame this sounds awfull. It's hard enough with a newborn without the added stress of bottle feeding. Especiallly if it's not something you were preparing for. My honest feeling is that since you said 'newborn' there is still hope for breastfeeding. (since she was trying for this and was advised at the hospital not to)
If you like I can contact my La leche league lady and ask if it's possible for someone to come over and help her. Perhaps it's not too late?
I obviously dont want to add any more pressure, but IF this is something she is still hoping for it could ease a lot of financial pressure as it has for me.
