question-circle What RULES do you have for your preschool child

I agree with you CIP!
I'm hoping not to be too dicipline orientated. But lets see.
I have already realized that power struggles with children are pointless. (even if they are only little babies!) Also I dont want to raise a wimp. He must always be ready to stand up for himself and to take risks and be up for new experiences.
Autonomy is key for me!

CIP, I agree 100% Your children learn from you, if they see you do something, they are going to do the same. Shout all the time, they will eventually shout back, be rude, so will they.

I always felt cause DH and I are pretty laid back, Em is the same.
I'm not saying she doesn't have a hissy, or be rude at times. But all children/adults are at times. She knows when she has done wrong and says sorry. Where if I know I shouted for no reason or was too harsh with something I also say sorry to her.

I agree Emsmom. I always say I don't want a robot child. I want a child with spirit. I want a child who questions things ,but do so with respect. Manners are key. Dylan must greet others and say please and thank you.

I do not have a strict set of rules for my kids but they know what can and can not be done in my house.

my daughter has taught me that her biggest teacher is my actions. I can not tell her o something and I do something else. I try to be as reasonable as I can with my kids and I have not had a reason why I should have strict rules for them.

married for 3 years with 7 yr old daughter and 2yr old son.

I must say with Em I'm pretty laid back, and for the most part it works for us.

She knows tidy up time, and after one fight where I packed her toys away, she has been happy to tidy up. Mat and I "help" but we insist she does the majority of it.

I never even insist she finishes her food. I will always ask, can you have just one more spoon, bite, whatever. And will even give her a little pudding after if she does. I know myself that often I'm not interested in anymore rice, but would love a bite of cake.

We have the star chart for her, and she gets a pressie once she has 20 stars. This works really well for us, and is great for me to re-stock her season waredrobe :)

The only thing I am very firm about is manners. She must greet people correctly, say please and thank you. This goes for every person she meets, shop ladies, petrol attendants, other children.

I spoil her rotten and indulge her, but manners to me are important. So far I feel I'm doing a pretty good job. She is well adjusted and 90% of the time well behaved.
