Hi All, I'd like to share with you my journey with natural hair.
I have black natural african hair but my hair texture is soft. My daughter on the other hand has thicker natural hair than I.
I resisted having to straighten it with chemical relaxers and I researched a lot on how I can manage it.
These are some things I learnt:
1. Natural hair needs moisture so anything that strips the hair of moisture is a no!
I use an organic shampoo on our hair and conditioner. You can also wash the hair with just conditioner and that will make it nice and soft.
2. Apply natural oils to the hair while damp to retain the moisture.
Oils such as Amla, Coconut, Jojoba, castor, olive oil are great for the hair. I make a daily hair conditioner for our hair which is a mixture of all these oils with a little shea butter and it works great.
3. When combing, use wide tooth comb and work in sections....be gentle and take your time.
A little secret I learned.....castor oil grows your hair like weeds.
Had braids put in a while ago and unfortunately they were tight and some came off with my hair. I had patches and a thin hair line, after learning about the castor oil I used it and within a month, there was a difference....a noticeable difference.
My daughter's hair has been growing well, will very little breakage because I do the above to maintain it. It remains soft and manageable.
Even tho your son's hair texture might not be exactly like mine or my daughters, it is curly and kinky. So I hope this helps you too.
B
