Who has 4- 5 year old Girls??

My daughter is 5.

I must confess that I do not allow my kids to watch television that is not Discovery, CBB's, National Geographic and now and then they can watch Boomerang and Disney. I block the other channels, so they can change channels, but they just can't watch half the crap that is there.

My kids have no idea who Justin Bierbers is - I do not allow them to watch music videos as personally I would prefer my kids to not watch and be copying that sort of behaviour.

My daughter has only got into Barbie this year as her friends at school talk about it - and we print the Barbie magazine, which I get for her.

My son who is 8 (9 in December) has no idea who half the "all the rave" idols are and icons on television, as I do not allow him to watch it.

I give in to one "fad" every 4 -5 months so he is not a total social outcast, and I make sure we talk about the "fad" and it's place in our life and reality.

I really think we make it more difficult for us as parents giving our kids access to all this media that often shows people talking in a disrespectful tone, women being portrayed as gyrating sexual creatures, and boys being either gangsta or what ever.

My life is a by far easier partly because I have controlled the media influences my kids get. My son was not "allowed" to watch main steam television until he was about 5. I only put DVDs on for him - he never sat and watched a television show so did not see the ads or the other things injected between shows.

I seriously do not have to deal with rudeness/tantrum and sarcasm from my kids, because they are not exposed to it as something to copy.

Don't get me wrong - I still have to reprimand my son and remind him that his "tone" with me needs some improvement as of course he tests his boundaries and so does my daughter.

When I compare my kids and the way they speak, to how my kid's school friends speak and behave - I seriously seriously thank my lucky stars that I chose the route I have - I have far less behaviour and cheekiness issues to deal with, because my kids are not influenced by crap on tv and are not imitating the behaviour.

Listen I am not living under a rock - we watch television - we ensure that when we are watching "our" shows the kids are not in the room and they are watching "their" shows in their tv room. We have magazines, my kids have internet access and play games on-line - but it is controlled and I ensure that they have what I deem age-appropriate stuff flashing before their faces.

I think most young kids like Justin Bieber

It's just good to know it's not just my 4.5 years old that sings Justin Bierber songs. I'm so tired of Oh Baby baby bay Ohhh oh Baby baby baby Lol. My Lg is alos going to Grade R a year early. That is the problem I think, she associates with all the 5-6 and 6-7 yrs old girls at school because I think she is bored with the things the girls her own age do.

Well, Danette is also 4. She will be 5 in January 2011. We are sending her to Gr R a year earlier, as she has proven to be more than ready, Reuben is in Gr R now, and she actually helps him a lot with his school work. She'll be with the same teacher Reuben is with, as was Micayla and Connor.

Anyway, luckily Danette like pretty "tame" Afr music like Kurt darren (puke), and Nicholas louw and such. She likes Justin Bieber too, well who does not?Even Xadriaan sings Baby oh baby all day But we luckily don't have peer pressure (yet) ad Danette is still home. At the moment, I am not too worried Sorry, I guess that does not help you much...

How do you deal with thier moods, tantrums, sarcastic comments and backchatting? Do you let them listen to the latest music on the Radio even if they don't know what they are singing about and do you let them put on make-up if they ask you for it? My daughter is in a pre-school school and I am having to deal with all these things as even though I do not talk/do or promote any of these things at home she sees her friends doing all thse things at school and then wants the same at home. I think I already know all the words to Justin Bierbers songs and Lady Gaga eventhough I didn'thave clue who they were (sorry i'm dof) before she started singing them. Arghh i'm worried. Don't want her to think she is not allowed and I don't want to seem like a old fart. i just want to know what would be the best way to handle it and have her interested in more age appropriate things. She is on ly 4.5 years old.
