Ah Meags I can feel your pain! I really struggled with the BF and also had unsupportive mom and mil...though DH helped a lot. I wanted more than anything to bf exclusively. Well you need to pat yourself on the back cos you have mastered one thing and that is having milk by the litres LOL! The midwives helped me tremendously at Kingsway and Jordyn latched perfectly(though he did a lot of latch unlatch....you know my Pead explained it as fighting with the boob and some babies are like that. I found this so hard as I thought baby would latch and feed calmly-BF was supposed to be a beautiful experience. Anyway I just couldnt get the whole supply and demand thing right, Jordyn wasnt a very demanding feeder, and was very content. I tried expressing but like you say it gets a bit much. I guess a slowly just started doing a mix of formula and BF, which I know is not ideal. But I did this for 3 months. I breastfed when I could and bottle when I had to. I guess I was extremely lucky he took both.

All I can say is Meags you are an amazing mom for persevering because many of us probably would have cracked by now. Jordyn has been off the breast for 2 months now and I still miss it, it really is a tough decision. I sometimes still beat myself up for not working harder at it.

I agree that when your mom is gone, take time out for only you and baby-get hubby to help around the house and just try rest and bond with baby. The more stressed you are the more baby will pull away from boob. I mean you know all this.

Also with Reflux and Colic wow, thats a horrible combination, but you got some nice advice a couple of posts back. Just do what you feel is right and dont feel guilty, or worry what people think cos you are M's mom and you do know what is best for him.

Take care and keep us updated.

regards
*Mum that misses the BF*

Hi Ladies, how are you and babies doing?

Chris - Sorry to hear that all 3 of your babies are sick. Hope that they get better soon.

Meags - I am how you feel. There are times when I am so tired and frustrated that I could just cry. Sometimes I want to find a quiet spot where no one can find me, just to sleep. It will get better. Hang in there.

twinbee - thats no nice about the clicks clinic. I am taking Shrevash to Dischem for his next vaccines in May, I hope they are ok. The clinic that I normally take them to is fully booked for the entire month of May.

mandz - Congrats on the full nights sleep. I can't wait for that to happen.

Ster, lizelle, Suhaila, binks, Maryke, Vix, miksmommy, mommyn, (to all those that I forgot) - Hope you and the lo's are doing fine.

Nothing major on my side. Both Thashreya and Shrevash are fine. Taking Tashreya this afternoon for her next vaccines. Hope she doesn't have a reaction to them. I hate seeing them cry. I always get this lump in my throat and want to cry as well.

Shrevash weighs 5.88 kg now.

I was thinking of having the mirena loop put in but after reading comments about women falling pregnant on it, I am having second thoughts. Maybe I should just have my tubes tied (tubal ligation).

Meags, I feel your "pain". I also couldn't understand how motherhood could be so difficult after waiting and longing for it so long. Yes, Inge was sometimes a little angel but there were nights that I swear I never wanted to have another child again. My worst was between 3 and 10 weeks. I just felt bad whenever people asked me that my complaining would make me look like a bad person / mother. I have never cried so much like I did in the said period BUT it does get better friend - hang in there. I know it sounds too good to be true but Inge is much better since about 11 weeks.

Not sure what the info is that you got so far re reflux - here is a few from me
1) don't let him lay flat to drink - Inge still sits on my lap to drink (even at night)
2) between feedings I will take the bottle away from her to wind and once the wind is out she can feed again (she does moan but she must first wind). You will quickly hear when he is actually swallowing a wind and sometimes his facial expression will also be an indication that he has swallow a wind
3) once finished, Inge be laying against my shoulder for X amount of minutes - in the beginning it was 30 minutes - now it is about 15 - 20 minutes.
4) I found heating Inge's milk caused more winds - she takes her milk at room temperature
5) Apparently when you mix the formula the bubbles it creates can also cause wind - I have done a bit of research about this and there are mixed feelings regarding this but I normally let her bottle stand for about 30 minutes before giving it to her. I make two bottles in the morning and 2 again later in the afternoon
6) Reflux babies must be fed more often - Inge still drinks between 2-4 hours and the amount depends on 80 - 120mls.
7) You can try Nestragel - it worked for Inge for about 8 weeks but then she started getting hyperacidity (suur). My friend told me about a product called "Baba Suur" - I'm sure you wouldn't be able to find it in Miami but let me know and I can send you a bottle over. You know how you feel just before you have to drink eno's etc - I take it that is how they feel
8) Inge sleeps on a normal pillow (I have a thin pillow (not those high ones) for her). the only time she sleeps on a normal baby pillow is when she is on her tummy. I also do a lot of tummy time with her and she loves sleeping on her tummy. You can also put something underneath his mattress to raise his head.
9) heat packs on her tummy - or rubbing oil / castor oil on her tummy and then a facecloth on that and then the nappy (hope it makes sense). Anything to keep the tummy warm. A lot of kangaroe time with her
10) Dummies - helps with the "suur"
11) whatever you do - do not let him lay flat as the "suur" goes up and down and it will make him more uncomfortable
12) sitting in the car chair (piggelo (spelling??)) was also not helping Inge - the more upright she is the better. If she has just had a bottle and I put her in her chair it wouldn't be long before she gives me most of that milk back

If I think about anything else I would let you know
Strongs and thinking of you!!!!!!!!

Hi ladies

sorry I have no time to post :(

Matt is seriously a challenge and I am not "loving" motherhood. I know that is selfish and there are so many people who would die to be a mom. But I dont understand why I had to get the difficult baby :( Reflux and colic and refusing to breastfeed. Every waking moment he has - he is screaming (not crying...) so all day is spent trying to make him sleep so he stops screaming!

saw the chiro this morning and seeing him again on friday and monday. I really hope this helps.

please see my post below and feel free to give me ANY advice or opinions or anything!!
www.moomie.co.za/forum/13-ladies-corner/...eastmilk.html#173596

I dont feel depressed. I just feel silly that I assumed I'd be having this easy baby and be going out shopping with my mom every day, sleeping when he did, breastfeeding etc. I never once even considered that this baby wouldnt latch!!!! I am in 2 minds...part of my wants to try the breastfeeding again in a couple of weeks (when my mom is gone - she is not supportive of the BF thing...). I feel if I am alone I can tackle it better instead of having someone on the sideline feeling 'sorry' for Matt. but another part of me just wants to stop the pumping and move to formula and have a few more hours in the day/night for myself instead of having to pump all the time.

Matt's cord fell off last night :) yippee!
ok he is going to wake soon so I'm off...

Hi girls, hope you're all doing well/better. Chris thinking of you guys- can't be easy. Babies went for their 14 week vaccinations today- went to clicks eastgate instead of our usual place as we're going for a photoshoot on sat so didn't want to go on fri. And our usual place don't do vaccinations on wed- they're really excellent- even phoned us the next day after their 6w vacs. What a mistake to take them to clicks- no bed to lay babies down, cramped little room-even a half-eaten apple lying around, nurse takes forever in between vacs etc etc we even weighed them ourselves. Gemma now 5.2 and Jamie 4.2- so they're growing nicely. Sorry got to now!
