Tiagosmom, I haven't given birth there, but I as far as I know, they have everything they need to deal with emergencies right there. So you wouldn't need to be transferred anywhere. Also, wet lung problems are usually caused by c-secs and is not a common problem in natural births.

Question sort of related / unrelated. Since it seems the only option here in JNB to have a Vbac is to go to somewhere like Genesis Clinic has anyone given birth there? I know its stunning, they have a standbye gynae and theatre ect etc my only concern is if I do have a VBAC there and say something goes wrong with me or baby do they have the facilities to assist. When my son was born he developed wet lung disease and had to be admitted to nicu so my worry is if something like that had to happen again or godforbid something even worse do they have the facilities to assist immediately or do you have to wait to be transfered to a hospital ?

So true, Claudia! And what's so 'funny' about this is that many many HIV+ pregnant women in gov care don't even get a caesar!!

@Yaz, I know - its interesting to note that the US has the most medicalised model of birth in the first world yet is one of the lowest with regards to birth outcomes. The netherlands has one of the highest levels of home births yet is one of the best places for good outcomes.

Its easy for docs to cite bad outcomes in SA where 25% of the population is HIV positive and/or doesnt get any antenatal care......Something you cant compare to a healthy women living in Sandton in a house with running water and money to buy healthy food.....

Hasie - No problem. I am seeing her on Aug 1st. She is Nicolette Barkhuizen, but there are a few VBAC midwives> I just called until one could fit me in and that was her. I know that these ladies are experienced VBAC midwives: Henny de Beer, Karen van der Merwe, Xoli Makabane or Sue King and Phindi Mashinini. Their contact details are all on the Genesis website. They may be more but I just scribbled down some names as I started looking for a midwife.
