Hi Simone,

Im with Discovery on a classic Comprehensive plan they too only had pre-authorised general ward, Mulbarton Hospital in JHB only have semi private/private or family. We were also told its really expensive to book for private but after having my first born in a semi-private (even though I had the room to myself until the last day, if I experienced what I went through bleeding etc on the first night, I personally wouldnt have wanted to be in the room with someone else, that poor woman would have been in shock). Also I had to constantly use the private room across from me as I had natural and the private rooms had the baths, semi only had showers - something else to take into consideration.

I had baby no two and chose a private room last year November which actually was only R150 a day. We were also told a high figure and then on the night I was booked in they explained that the medial aid pays the general ward amount even though we chose private and the difference is what you need to pay to the hospital. Hope that makes sense.

Hope this helps even though you probably have had baby :)

Hello there,

I gave birth in 2013 at Sunninghill Hospital in Jhb.

The first 2 nights I spent in a private room, of which i was not charged for by the hospital. The room was available and I was there quiet early in the morning. So the kind and very caring maternity staff, let me have it. On day 3 I was moved to a semi private, I shared with one other mum, who was rather hot all the time, so the aircon will always be on super freezing. That for me was so uncomfortable, every time i requested for her to turn it down, she would but for a short while.

In my opinion I would think a private room would be ideal.

hi there,

i was in a general ward for both my births and didn't mind it at all.
my hospital has 4 beds in a room.
with my 1st we were 2 ladies in the room for my entire stay. i never felt like it was a problem, i was so involved with my little guy i never even noticed them and her baby was crying most of the time.
my hubby was with me most of the time as well and he also said that it never bothered him.

with my 2nd little boy i had the big room all to myself. i think we were only 3 ladies in the entire ward

for me personally, i will not spend the extra money.

me 35, DH 39

Thanks for the advice MommywannaB.

I have decided I definitely will be getting a private room- the hospital only has either 4 bed general wards or private rooms or family rooms. 4 bed ward is a big no no for me- too much stress.

Hubby says its up to me coz he knows I will be paying for it myself lol. Atleast he realises I will do what I want and he can't really stop me *evil laugh*

Hi,

Book a private room!

I just gave birth and was put in a room with someone else and my experience was awful!

There is no privacy and it's kinda eewy sharing a bathroom with someone who cannot even clean their blood from the toilet.

It's worth spending that extra.

Thanks Amy.

I called the hospital- they charge R900 extra per night for a private room and R1300 per night for a family room.
I know hubby will say its a bit much for such a short period so gonna have to try and convince him. Although, someone said to ask them on the day how full they are so I know what the situation in the wards are first and take it from there.

Hi Simone

I gave birth at CT mediclinic, which only offers semi private and private (no general ward). I was in semi private, but I was fortunate to be alone in the room for the first 3 nights! The last night I got a roomie. And to be honest, my husband and I both decided that with the next baby we will definitely go private if possible.
Maybe if I had a roomie from the beginning I wouldn't feel this way because I wouldn't know what I'm missing haha.
But if privacy and space is priority, I would recommend private.
When I gave birth (16 months ago) a private room was around R700 extra per night at CT mediclinic.

Goodluck :)
