file Moving baby to a car seat - what age?

16 years 5 months ago #8011 by julz
When they exceed the weight. Snug and safe is 9kg and others are 13 kg

When the straps exit the seat below shoulder height.

When the baby's head is above the top of the seat.

Children should ideally face backwards in larger seats too until age 2-4.

The weight should be an indication. I think i'll keep my 10 month old in the rear facing seat for another month or so, then move to the next seat.

As far as I know the problem with second hand seats are that you can't be sure that they have not been in an accident. If you know the person you buy from, it shouldn't be a problem. I bought my snug and safe from my sister and its still fine to use again for my next baby.

I do think Yaz is right, it is about the weight, but when they are close to the weight limit, you start to wonder if the straps are going to hold them safely and so on.

I can't see anything wrong with a car seat bought second hand - subject to it not being involved in a car accident - but I could be wrong.

Funny how your brain forgets all this stuff.

What Yaz said..
It's down to weight rather than age.
You should keep a child rear facing as long as possible.

I have the same problem with Kyle. He is too big for his baby car seat. He actually climbs out of his while I am driving. Last weekend, as I was reversing out the driveway, he climbed out the seat and went sat on the floor. His seat is for babies up to 13kgs but I think he needs to move to the bigger seat now. Just like you, I cant even pick him up if he is seats in his seat. For me, I think it thats my first sign that he is ready for the big move.

I would also like to know if anyone has experienced any problems buying a second hand seat.

I thought it depends on their weight, some of the baby car seats are from birth to 9kg, some up to 13kgs. But I haven't had my LO yet so not sure ;)

I know I should remember how this works, but I can't right now and someone often has the "ah-hah" moment for me.

My +10 month old is in a rear facing snug-and-safe (or baby car seat) - she is so big and seems to be spilling out of it. I feel that she is still too young to move to a front facing car seat, but she just appears too big in her present seat - I can barely lift the snug-and-safe when she is in it.

What the signs you can or should move baby to a front facing car seat?

And has anyone ever experienced a problem buying a second hand baby car seat?
