Just got confirmation from Discovery now that I was approved for PMB. Don't have the codes handy, but they basically cover a total of 16 consultations (more because of placenta previa). 8 are under one code and 8 under another code and they also cover 2 scans. So relieved.

PMB = Prescribed Minimum Benefits and covers a list of about 270 conditions that are covered by the medical aids. i.e. the medical aids pay for the diagnosis and treatment - it does not come out of your pocket or even your medical savings account.

It has recently come to light that Pregnancy is in fact on the PMB list only no-one really knows that and so everyone pays for the antenatal visits out of their own pockets. Also, the medical aids don't mention it either and so use the money from your medical savings account (if you have one) to pay for visits, blood tests, scans etc.

It seems now that you can download the PMB application form and get your doctor to complete it and send it to discovery and then they will approve it (hopefully) and then they will cover all the costs of the antenatal visits and 2 main scans (from the hospital benefit - their expense, not from your savings like they usually do).

My son was born over a year ago.. does any of this apply to me? But I would still like to know the details so Im prepared for second pregnancy.
