"My husband and I tried to conceive for over a year with no luck. We had a lot of pressure from our family and friends. Eventually we asked them to please stop asking us."
"Two months later, Leigh fell pregnant."We were over the moon! I booked the first available appointment with my doctor. I made the appointment for early morning so I could go into the office straight after. My husband was away on business when I went, so the whole way in the car I had butterflies. I was so excited and even got there really early. The doctor walked in and greeted me, showed me through to his office and asked me all the usual questions. 'When was your last period?'; 'How long was it?' etc etc. When I told him, he pulled out his calendar wheel from his desk and checked the dates. According to him, I should be around 7 ½ weeks pregnant. He excitedly told me that we will be able to hear the heartbeat. I went into the other room and slipped into the gown. He came in and put the jelly on the monitor and used the Doppler while I waited patiently staring at the screen."
There's no heart beat
"After a few minutes he looked at me with despair and said that there was no heartbeat and that he was terribly sorry. He asked me to get dressed and meet him in his office. He left the room and all I remember was sitting on the bed on my own feeling completely empty. I slowly got changed and went through to his office. He had told me that unfortunately I had had a miscarriage. At 7 ½ weeks we should have been able to hear the baby’s heartbeat but there was nothing there."
Left in tears
"After asking him what the next course of action was, he wrote me a script to 'get rid of' whatever was left in my system. He told me to come back in two weeks to check it had all been 'cleared out' of my system and if it hadn’t I needed to be booked in for a scrape. I made the appointment and left his office in tears."
A glimmer of hope
"My husband excitedly sent me a message to find out how it went. I was still sitting in the car in the parking lot bawling my eyes out. When I replied he called me straight away from his hotel room in France and listened to me crying. I told him about the script and he said that whatever I decided to do was up to me. Something told me not to fill that script and I drove to my mom’s house for some comfort. My husband called me again and said that he had been doing a lot of “googling” and said that he didn’t think I should fill the script but rather wait for my body to naturally expel what was not 'supposed to be there'. A week later he came back from France and we waited. We took a HSCG test where they test your hormone levels. We had very little knowledge about what the results meant but after some more Googling we quickly surmised that they were incredibly high for someone who was not supposed to be pregnant."
Heartbeat blasted through speakers
"Another week went by and we both went back to the doctor with the results in hand. He looked at the results and was quite shocked. He said they were incredibly high and that if I wasn’t pregnant the markers shouldn’t be so high. With a little bit of hope, we went into his examination room. He placed the Doppler on again and my little boy’s heartbeat blasted through the speakers. We all looked at each other in utter amazement. We went back into his office on such a high! He was mumbling and didn’t quite know what to say. He very quickly referred us to another doctor and we left his office. The ironic thing is that about a month later we received an SMS from his rooms thanking his clients for their 'valued support' and that 'unfortunately' he was retiring."
"Our amazing, healthy boy is now three years old and the light of our lives! The whole thing is that we never gave up and let things happen naturally. Your body is an amazing thing, it really does get rid of the things that are not supposed to be there. Also, don’t believe everything the doctors say. You know your body better than anyone else."
Here's Leigh's cute baby boy, Connor, drinking water off their tent after it rained. Cute!
