RSV Virus

Oh my heart just aches when I read your stories. My 1st LB was in hospital a few times for this and we had to watch him struggle to breath, tubes in his nose to help with the breathing and its just awful. I don’t ever want to go through that again.

Nebulising is the best way to go. Unfortunately it (most of the times) comes back just a few days/weeks after you stop or they are healthy again.

The only thing that worked for my LB was asthma pumps. The doc later diagnosed asthma (which I really don’t think he had) but ja, those pumps worked like a miracle. He got 2 and we used it for 1 month and the bad chest was gone!!! This winter he started again and his brother too and I started with the nebuliser and later decided to give both of them the pumps and it was really just 2 days and they were better.

Aribeth and Chris, hope all the babas get better soon! THinking of you all! Guess best advise is to try to combat any secondary infections. I think the nose Freda is a good investment.

We went the government route on vaccinations, I know the private clinic at Storks nest recommended the RSV vaccination but with me being a SAHM and not working, money is not flush so I opted for the Clicks pharmacy clinic where I have got all Nathan-Johns vaccinations from Government stock (except one).

I felt Sarah-Jane survived fine on the government route (we werent on medical aid at time bec we had returned from Africa).

I was so lucky, Sarah-Jane had her first ear infection and anti-biotic last month!

Would you recommend he has the RSV vaccination - he was 7 weeks prem, and Sarah-Jane is 19 months old. I am still BF and hope to for as long as possible (well until a year LOL).

THey are both at home and in a bit of contact with other friends' kids, but no creche activities.

How much does the vaccination cost?
If we decided to do it, should we do it for both kids?

My triplets currently have it, luckily they have not have to be admitted, there are no antibiotics and it is highly contagious. My paed said anything from 2 to 6 weeks. We almost took our lg to hospital as her breathing was very short.

We're using saline as often as possible, illiadin 3 times a day, nebulizing, humidifier with karvol, tissue salts, bennets breathe easy kit and physio everyday, we're also using the nose frida care kit (u can suck out the mucous from their nose) we use that very often. We also do a bit of physio ourselves, where we lie baby but with head lower than chest and do percussions on their back so the mucous can go to the nasal area to be sucked out.

There is not much else other than the meds they do give u and what u do for them now.

It is very contagious. Our medical aid was going to pay for the vaccination for it but we were too late, the paed said its of no use to do it now because they already have it, it will go away but they have built antibodies.

Aribeth, my eldest had this at 21months and was in hospital for 2 weeks.

Simple things that I did to help her (in her case it cause permenat asthma) nebulise her every night, She was on a iron supplement and a multivitimin. Her pump never left my sight. It was almost 3 years ago so I cant remember everything.

Research the subject, thats what I did and back then I got loads of advise and tip son how to make her life and mine better and easier.

My lg had it when she was 18 months. You're right nothing to be one but treat symptoms.
Nebulise with meds ventoline and another one, can't remember the name;had an antihistamine and singular.

They also done a chest xray, just to be sure

She's had it twice now and luckily my other little girl didn't catch it but apparently its highly contagious.

hope she starts to feel better soon.

This is RSV season. Dylan got it this time two years ago. Not much you can really do to prevent it. The daymom does need to be stricter though.

Trust me I am a working mom and know how hard it is when your kid is sick, but the best thing is to have lo at a daycare where they are really strict. It means less likelyhood of your child getting sick too.

it is very catchy though and just being in a room with a kid is all it takes with RSV. Good news is that as they get older they handle it perfectly well. It just troubles really young kids especially since they cant get rid of the phlegm themselves.

Once they move more and can cough nicely it isn't really an issue anymore.
