We cancelled our DSTV a while ago and it's wonderful how it frees up your time! I'm also for no to little TV. We have a few cute sing-along and dance DVD's (like Lollos en Ghoempie) which Nienke watches and dances along to.

I have an issue with the crap movies they make for kids. Especially Disney. I bought Dumbo the other day, thinking it would be a cute little elephant but still, this little elephant was tormented by 'ghost'-elephants while horrible music played. I find all the Disney movies has this thread of 'evil' running through it. My one friend's son, who watches a lot of DVD's, is getting nightmares because of what he saw on tv. At 2!

@memo, I honestly think its easier to not even switch on the tv. I let James play when I cook. Its hellish difficult, but I manage. I have 2 cupboards that I have left "unlocked" which I allow him to freely empty and play with. He plays drums with my pots, fits lids onto tupparware, puts small objects into cups.
I'm also of the no tv standpoint, but then James is still little, so we will see how it goes:)
As for sleeping...He now goes to sleep in his cot, no rocking etc...Its all very exciting:)

I don't allow my 18 month old to watch any tv. It's just something I've never been comfortable with and now it's not an option I consider as a form of stimulation. I only watch after he's gone to bed - it means I miss early evening tv, but it's now something I'm used to and there's nothing I miss.

On the advice of friends I rented a Barney dvd a while ago because they told me it was good for LO's and I should let my son watch it. After ten minutes I switched it off because I thought "this sh*t is like a bad acid trip" (I lived a little before I became a mom) and he hasn't watched tv since.

It's really hard! We don't watch much so usually only when Dylan is asleep, but Neil started by putting on the tv in the early mornings over the weekend. We didn't allow any for the first year though. I must add that we sit with him when he is infront of the tv. We managed to limit it to weekends, but then for some reason we allowed him to watch when he got home from school which isn't great.

We just had a big tantrum because he wants tinkerbell. This is after his bath which is really odd as he never watches tv to go to sleep. Rule in our house! We don't have tv in any bedroom. I have no idea why he acted up, but maybe because we were away and he had to sleep in our bed as there was only a double bed. He is asleep now.

I would so like to ban it!

Thanks for the thread.

I'm super worried about the amount of tv J is watching lately! How do you guys avoid it?
He's not allowed in the kitchen, so often when I need to cook I'll switch it on..
I know...
So I avoid it during the day but in the (early) evening...

Anyway, any advise?

Ps. sometimes I'll even put on a kids movie to get him to go to sleep on me like that!

I must say I am quite a fan of the tv as the "third parent or babysitter" in our house, but you do raise a valid point and that is about drawing lines where TV goes off.

We are going to be adopting two-nights-of-no-tv-or-computers from next week and seeing how that goes.

We also do not allow tv on when we eat or to fall asleep to.

It is tricky to monitor as sometimes it is the time when you get so much done, when you have them watching Barney at it is on repeat .... sometimes I do love Barney .... but I have moved on to Cbeebies which is the winner for me right now.
