Charnenay, I use this same recipe. I have for years now and can recommend it.

This is the recipe I use: Does not have the Alum Crystals (I also don't know what that is). I am making it for Emily's bday party and tried out a batch on the weekend and it works great :)

2 cups flour
2 cups warm water
1 cup salt
2 Tablespoons vegetable oil
1 Tablespoon cream of tartar (optional for improved elasticity)

I add food coloring as well.

Mix all of the ingredients together, and stir over low heat. The dough will begin to thicken until it resembles mashed potatoes.

When the dough pulls away from the sides and clumps in the center, as shown below, remove the pan from heat and allow the dough to cool enough to handle.

IMPORTANT NOTE: if your playdough is still sticky, you simply need to cook it longer!
Keep stirring and cooking until the dough is dry and feels like playdough.

I've never heard of it myself either. If my chemist stocks it I'm sure most will. Apparantly it's also good for gargling for a sore throat =) Also very cheap.

I haven't tried it yet - just cut and paste from another source - but sounds like fun if my toddler does't make himself sick by eating to much of it!

Thanks Juno...

Also want to know where you can get alum crystals. I honestly have never heard of it before.

Juno, thanks for that! I have been looking for a non-toxic play dough recipe (Lilly is still quite big on mouthing) and was going to post on Moomie. Stupid question: where do you get alum crystals? Thanks :)
