It's normal.. Anyway children should be encouraged to climb, it's an important milestone. I use to have a couch infront of my kitchen counter and it's not there anymore because I was having the same problem.
Sorry but your mom is being unreasonable. Thats why we baby proof!! Because at this age they are a danger to themselves. THEY ALL ARE. This is also why this age is considered to be so hectic!
Tell your mom the fact is, unless she sees your child as he is, a child (and a normal one, thank god) she is gonna drive herself crazy!
Good for Heinrich, one day he will be a good listener. And Luke will be a good climber.
If hitting him over something is not working then she should consider that she is just taking her frustration out on him which is unacceptable. And if she keeps hitting him at such a tender age she should be carefull he's not one of those babies that start hitting back.
Good luck. It's hard because your mom is taking care of him, but the bottom line is he's also her family just as you are and thats why she is helping. You'll just have to help her see what she cant and then she'll come around. I think they had different ideas about things in their generation. She must just evolve.
The last time I was visiting with my mom (whom I also trust whole heartedly with J) he was throwing one of his tantrums, does Luke do that yet? lol) and my mom picked him up and put him in the room and closed the door. haha,I also dont do that, so I laughed at her, like she was being hilarious, and fetched him.
I suppose the way I deal with it is by making very sure that she understands that just because she has done it before does not make her any better at it.
Just keep hitting her with the facts.. He's a toddler what do you expect?

Babyshoes, I can relate. My LG is also very strong willed and started throwing tantrums from as early as 10 months. So rest assured: it's completely normal toddler behaviour :) They are not actually being naughty, they just test boundaries while exploring the world. I posted this article a while ago, it was a real eye opener and helped me to understand why toddlers act the way they do:

www.babble.com/toddler/toddler-behavior-...s-toddlers-tantrums/

One of the things I try to do is limit the opportunities for her to get into dangerous situations. I tried to make the house as child proof as possible (I realised that 'completely child proof' is an illusion) and let her run around and explore. They learn through experience and trial & error. Like Jems said, they don't yet understand when you explain to them "you are going to burn your fingers really badly when you touch the hot stove plate!". So ja, part of my concept is also that sometimes she has to hurt herself (of course only very very limited) in order to learn. E.g. she keept on crawling under our dining room table and wanted to stand up. After bumping her head for the fifth time, she got the message and is now only getting up once she has reached the other end of the table.

So if there's any way you can make the rest of your mom's house more child proof, do so and let Luke explore. I figured that Lilly got really bored when she had to be in the same space the whole time so I made our house her play pen :)

Wishing us lots of strength and patience for bringing up these little buggers

Your mom needs to take a chill pill....

Of course she has to adjust her lifestyle a bit to accommodate a baby!

I saw the fabulous saying yesterday -remember you are raising a child, not dealing with an inconvenience!

There are chairs and boys being boys will most likely climb them.

He is still quite little and you cannot explain that he will fall and hurt himself quite yet...

Your mom has to keep an eye on him that is all.

Just remind her that this is her beautiful grandson and how honoured she should feel being able to look after him!

Good Luck!!

Sidebar: we went away with my parents for a week. Jade was Jade and misbehaved a few times, felt so guilty but one night got tipsy and told my parents off in a nice way, saying they need to get with it and she is a toddler after all!

HELP!

I am in need of some serious advise that is going to work and help please.

Luke is 14 months old... Your average toddler who most of the time does not have ears and is determined to do his own thing...

But I am at my wits end because my mom is at her wits end and this morning before leaving for work she snapped completely!

Let me give you some background - I live at home with my mom. The only places that are child proof are in my moms home are: my bedroom, the back yard, the playroom and the kitchen (or so we thought). My mom has a babygate up so that Luke cannot get into the rest of the house from the kitchen - here he has at least got access to the playroom and outside. In my room he can do what he likes when he likes (that is our space - which is relatively big).

My mom had a problem with Luke opening kitchen cupboards - so I bought special baby locks for all the kitchen cupboards that open with a special magnet key! Awesome - 1 problem eliminated and my mom off my back... :)

Now the S*(&%t's hitting the fan cos Luke climbs on chairs and onto her kitchen table (we have a big house and there is a round table in the kitchen with 6 chairs around it) - She has been stern, she has shouted, she has spanked his bum and he just does not seem to listen. I have done exactly the same (even though I really did not want to). You smack him and he will cry for how ever long and literally go pull the chair out, climb onto it and get on the table again. NOTHING WE DO IS WORKING! :(

My mom's biggest fear is that he falls off the kitchen table and hurts himself. Completely normal - any mother / granny would be concerned about that.

Yesterday my mom took the chairs out of the kitchen and put them in the passage so that Luke would not be able to climb on the kitchen table - but when I got home - she let it rip with me about how she does not want to change her lifestyle to suite my child and that my child is naughty and he does not have ears blah blah blah...

This morning she had the same thing to say and I was in tears by the time I left for work.

My mom looks after Luke and my Godchild (Heinrich is 11 months older than Luke). Heinrich is not half as naughty as Luke and he does not do what Luke does and yes he has gotten on the table a few times - but was reprimanded and has not done it again!

Putting Luke in a creche at this point is not an option. I am single parent and Luke's dad is not involved in his life, is it at all possible that Luke already knows that he can get away with just about anything?

When visiting friends - I am always checking up on him just in case he gets up to mischief.

Is this behavior normal?

PLEASE PLEASE I NEED ADVICE!!!
