I don't think because there has been internet access and parenting books written (and freely available to buy) that people will become better parents. The information age has defnitely not given us "knowledge/wisdom" but merely information. Each individual is able to decide for himself whether if he is interested in the information and how it will be applied in their lives. There is more power to the individual nowadays, but it does not garantee that the information will "bear fruit".

I heard another interesting thing the other day (that had my husband in stiches)...
The guys from "freakeconomics" reckons that a parent who buys 10 parenting books have proved to be a better parent. Not because that parent has even read the books, but because it takes a certain type of parent that is willing to evaluate his parenting skills.

It was an interesting read GW.

Isn't it quite ironic in a way with all today's society access to information & therapists etc we are stilling turning out the most messed up, obese, rude & disrespectful kids? And those are the "educated parents".

I just look at some of these of kids and think OMG!

1st timer, yes, I agree, do what works for your own family.

However it is interesting that most people need therapy from psychologists often due to the style of parenting they have received in your home. In my opinion it does not "pass" and 20 years down the line a person could be struggling everyday of his/her life due to bad parenting styles used. Yes, none of us are perfect parents and we will all make mistakes, but generalising those mistakes and hoping for the best is a dangerous bet especially if psychology research proves the opposite.

I dunno... I know some kids that could definitely do with a little more "managing" from their parents....

Depending on the danger involved in what he's doing J gets ignored, distracted, shouted at, a klap (very light on nappy before you call child line!) or 20-30 seconds in a corner. Pulling plugs out gets a corner. Throwing toys was semi ignored until he threw a rock last week around newborns - a klap and a corner for that one. I very much think it depends onthe kid and the situation. Do what works for you and your family. It will pass and (personally) I suspect the one more scarred 20 years down the line will be you no matter how you deal with him :)

James is also doing this:) I just tell him firmly that its not okay to smack mommy and then hug him tight like its mentioned above. So far so good.
I know hes probably a bit young, but I have introduced emotion cards already to try help him along to understanding his feelings. I've drawn happy, sad, and angry faces (for now, hopefully will introduce a few more later) on cards and try show him those faces when he reacts....

When he gets upset with a toy its either because hes frustrated because it isnt doing what he wants in which case I "help" and if its because I have taken something dangerous away from him I distract him.....

I must admit though this age is HARD!!!!!!
