We have always just shaved the boys hair with one of those shaver thingys you get at Clicks.

Started off with me sitting with a boy on my lap and a towel around the child, in front of a mirror so they can see themselves.
First let him feel the vibration of the shaver, so it does not give him a fright, then shave away.

the first time or 2 was pretty traumatic, but now they LOVE having their hair cut. and run off to get everything themselves, even a brrom to sweep up afterwards.

It also helps that my hubby always does his hair first so they can see what is happening and Brandon will often do the first few "shaves" for him

I've have always cut my son's hair myself. Honestly I felt no need to pay whatever amount for someone to force him to sit still (something he does not do) and freak him out.
He is fine with me doing it and I also know I take my time and do a little at a time, it then takes about 15 mins or so - I cut it when it's dry as it's easier to see length etc.
Just make sure you have proper hair scissors, I got mine from Dischem ages back, but I'm sure they still have them - the Dischem own ones don't cost a bomb either.
Just be prepered for mess also, there will be little bits of hair all over, just hoover afterwards.
Cut a little at a time if you aren't confident cutting, as you can't put it back on once it's gone!
Give them something to read or a puzzle or something also, something you know will keep them a bit more still, or even in fron tof the telly!

Sorry Shonna, then I can't help. Maybe do it in the bath? Helps if the hair is wet.

Monic@, there is one at Leaping frog center in Fourways and one at Lifestyle. Don't know if there are any on the East rand.

Hey Shonna,

I don't know where you live but in Jhb we have a few kiddie salons. They are super quick and works around the toddler turning his head. And they give you a certificate for a first haircut. They have chairs that don't spin, making it easier for a toddler to sit on, and TV screens at each chair where they show kiddies movies.
