Thanks Niki,

I'll check out that website.
I think he might still be a bit young to understand rewards for tooth brushing, though I might try making up a song about it becuase we already have a bath time song which he gets excited about.
He didn't used to refuse so badly but he has been cutting all his molars and canines at the same time for the past 2-3 months and it's been roughly since that started that he started point blank refusing to open his mouth. So i'm hoping it gets better once they're all through. The last canine cut yesterday so just one more molar to go.

Niki, Thanks so much for all the info! Sandton is a bit far for us but I think I will consider it should she have a cavity. Not having to go for theatre to fix a tooth is always best.

I am going to get the Xylitol gel!! Brilliant stuff.

I hope you and Huggles are right, may it only be tartar build up. She is booked to go to the mouth hygienist next week, holding thumbs all goes well.

Hi Ladies,

There is a pediatric dentist in Wendywood in Gauteng, my husband went to him as a kid and now we have booked to take Paige for her first check up in September, when she will be nearly 3. His name is Dr Melman and you can check out his website www.pediatricdentist.co.za- it seems he doesn't use any drilling etc, but uses some new technology which is like a water lazer. we also asked about consult fees, as I expected them to be high, only R280 ( was shocked it was so cheap)

Paige's teeth all seem good, so its really just about a check up for us. Hasie thanks for all the tips, I always prefer a natural route , so will try some of the tips to avoid cavities.

We also use the Xylitol Gel with Paige as a toothpaste I think this has helped a lot, you have to use it 3-5 times a day, but you can also just put some on your finger and swirl it around their mouths, it makes it easier to clean the plaque etc off the teeth when you brush, you can find out more from their website www.teethforlife.co.za

Gloei and huggles, have you tried a reward for teeth brushing, Paige used to fight it, so we made up a tooth brushing song and gave her stickers for not fighting, also let her pick a new tooth brush etc and now we rarely have a fight.

Gloeiwurmpie, I dont think that's cavities, like Huggles says I think its a build up that can be cleaned by the Dr, its probably for the antibiotics she was on

not yet, but I would imagine that's a plaque build up or tartar.

I think that has to be scraped off by a dentist - brushing is not strong enough.

(I could be wrong though)

Here is a pic of her teeth. Is this the begining of cavities between the bottom teeth?
Anyone else's kids teeth who looks like this?

Thanks, that does make me feel better.
I feel quite bad not brushing more often but it's just such a struggle and I don't want it to become something he fears or hates so I don't force it too much.

 It is all a blur to me (too long ago) but I remember having a few days where we didn't brush at all. You are not alone. I remember it getting easier around age 2, but only now age 3.8 is she very keen to brush!
